Is SH a place for long drawn out debates or better suited for great one-liners?

I see it all the time, people asking why there is a lack of good debates on SH. Well, personally, I don't think SH is a place for long drawn out debates. Liberals are NOT going to convince Conservatives of anything and visa versa. Therefore, that is where the great one-liners comes in. If you think you are some great intellectual who has all the answers and can "win" a debate, how about sending personal messages back and forth to one another.

It would appear that 99.9% of the responses are great one-liners coming from each side, maybe two-liners, but thats it.

As we have all seen, when two members "get into it", they soon dominate a thread for days trying to convince each other of their point of view and no one is ever convinced by the other....LMAO.

So, instead of being a rube, if you want to seriously "debate" an issue why not do it like it should be done and spare the rest of us from your "I am right and you are wrong" prattling?

Seriously, does anyone really think any of our posts or comments are going to change a damn thing in the grand scheme of things?

I get what you're saying and have had the same thought at times. But other times I think the debates do have value. If people don't have anything of any depth to say to each other I would get bored here. I like the mix.

Some one-liners are pretty awesome, but debates happen, it's interesting when they happen, and I don't find them inappropriate. I'd say it's a place for both.

    That is a fair response.

I hate one liners! Rarely can anything substantive be said in a single sentence. Truth needs to be articulated clearly and as intelligently as possible. One liners are usually just insults!

I tend to disagree. I think often times more can be said with a little than trying to supply too much "information", which the majority of it seems to be cut and pasted from other sources anyway. Some of the most awe inspiring statements throughout history are one or two liner "quotations".

Great truth can be stated with great brevity. I do not find much "great truth" here on Sodahead. I agree with the cut and paste dissertations. They are usually accumualtions of "statistics" twisted to say what the author desires for them to say. They usually leave out inconvenient truths" if you know what I mean!

I agree but once in a great wile you will run into that person you can relate to . Personalities clash on here constantly and much easier then in real life . I think peoples true colors come out much easier because no one really knows who is who .

Both. Some things are worthy of debate, some are not.

Completely agree. But I think those long drawn out debates ought to be done off-line if you will. All they do is dominate a thread and there are no "winners".

The winners are the ones with best one liners within the long drawn out debate.
However, debating is not only about winning . It is about exposing things of which
you opposition is unaware and striking that blow.

Great one-liners are perfect for a good yuk but long drawn out 'winless' debates where no one is ever going to convince others only distracts from the site.
