Is 'Rock the Slut Vote' an Effective Political Tactic?

In response to Rush Limbaugh calling law student Sandra Fluke a "slut" for supporting mandated insurance coverage of contraceptives, Susan McMillan Emry, a 56-year-old mother of two, founded "Rock the Slut Vote." The tongue-in-cheek campaign proposes to reclaim the word from derogatory use, as well as to generate awareness with shock value.

Emry told ABC News, "It's really about taking the power away from that word more than it is about Rush Limbaugh. He gave the word the notoriety but we are trying to take it back." She also wrote in a blog post, "By reclaiming the most hurtful, shaming words, groups rise up, unite and fight against intimidation and injustice." Do you think the "Rock the Slut Vote" campaign will be effective? Will it be able to take the word back?

God knows there are enough sluts in the United States. Say what you want about the Muslims, they do have a point about the immorality in the West.

Men have always been into that, and that was also instinctive.

The reason why it is worthwhile for a man to have one woman and be exclusive with her is that she will be exclusive to him, AND she will be available for sex, and only with him. For most men, it's a better bet to get more offspring - and have *them* succeed - that way than to have sex with more and more women, which is difficult and has a great deal of overhead.

But a sexy lady will *always* turn a guy's head. Both of them.

No, as in a man being mate-exclusive, not the woman. Men have, evolutionarily, been very covetous, wanting to sleep with many women in order to spread his seed around and ensure that he propagates.

Now, more intelligent men choose to sleep with, and stick with, just one woman. Pity on all the players out there.

Although it's true that men do want to "sleep" with many women, and in general, it makes evolutionary sense, there is a certain logic for a man to choose one mate and stick with her.

But I am not convinced it has too much to do with "intelligence".

Ah yes, the old "men have no self-control" excuse and therefore women are always to blame.

The evolutionary argument only applies to us in pseudo-psychology, these days we have contraception, we are self-aware, we have sex not in order to reproduce (Majority of the time) but to built intimacy, bond and for pleasure.

Which means men and women have sex for the same reasons these days. We have evolved since our caveman past. Yes, men still (in general) have a higher sex drive and that is due to past practicality, yet many women have intensely high sex drives too and find it hard to say no to an attractive offer, so please don't bring in this pseudo-psychology from how we behaved in the caves, we as humans are constantly evolving and adapting to our environment.

Women watch porn too, masturbate, have kinky fetishes, one night stands and all the rest.

So don't say "it doesn't make sense" while ignoring all the variables and only focusing on the life of ape-humans.

It makes perfect sense, we have sex these days because we can. And a woman wanting to have sex doesn't make her a freak.

No, it's not an excuse, and it's not that "men have no control".

The problem is that women don't understand who men are, and many men try to deny their nature.

We have been educated as to what women want, and it's high time we educate the world as to what men want.

The desire for sex, and what is "attractive" and "sexy" is indeed based on evolution. It's hard-wired, and will not be changed in one generation, or ten. Try a thousand. Or more likely, ten thousand.

It is unusual for a woman to want sex as much as a man does, but there are always exceptions. Of course, a woman cannot reproduce without sex, so she wants it, but not in the same way as a man does. Remember, there are many many more strip clubs for men than there are for women.

No, you're throwing around pseudo-psychology and over simplification tactics in order to prove a point. You're generalizing, which is why I can't take your argument seriously.

"The desire for sex, and what is "attractive" and "sexy" is indeed based on evolution"

The desire for sex is based on evolution, however what is considered attractive is very cultural, in the past, heavy women were considered attractive, in our modern day the average attractiveness is shifting towards lighter women and even underweight women. This does not mean all men like leaner women, this just means there's a increased shift of attraction towards leaner women, and this is based on cultural aspects, not evolutionary.

In Mayan royalty, it was considered attractive for women to be cross-eyed ,so many women would make themselves cross eyed in order to be attractive. None of that has anything to do with evolution. And none of this is hard-wired.

Reproduction being the only purpose for sex no longer applies. It doesn't apply in most mammals, and it doesn't apply for humans. Therefore men and women have sex for the same reasons, and indeed there are more strip clubs for men, but as women are getting more sexual freedom, more strip clubs for women are opening up too.

Now I'm not denying that men in general do ha...

Now I'm not denying that men in general do have a higher sex drive, but none of that means that they cannot be responsible for their actions. It makes no sense to call a woman with a high sex drive a "slut" because she slept with a man who had the same level of sex drive that he did.

There is still a cultural guilt in many areas around the world that makes women feel uncomfortable if they are openly expressing an interest towards sex, again this is not evolutionary, but cultural.

    Also one more thing;

"We have been educated as to what women want, and it's high time we educate the world as to what men want."

Are you kidding me? Men have ruled the world for thousands of years, they have been allowed education for far more longer than women, they have been able to express themselves for far centuries, they have been able to explore, to lead, to control and suppress. And you're telling me that all that time, men never got a chance to say to the world what they want?

Yeah of course, women are the ones that the world has truly revolved around for all of history. And the world is so educated about women, which explains why women are still getting poisoned and thrown acid on by men it certain places for wanting an education or a divorce, because obviously men understand women and know what they truly want.

Although it's true that the specific aspects of what is attractive is cultural, the general idea behind those aspects are based on evolution.

In most of the Western world, an intelligent and successful man is attractive. That that he hunts, for example, plays no part. But in, say, Amazonia, a man who is a good hunter is attractive to a woman there. Although the specifics are different, the underlying aspect - a man who can provide - is the same.

The underlying reason for sex is indeed reproduction, and it still applies, and will likely do so for many generations. This is true even though reproduction may not occur from any one given act. That is why men are attracted to pretty women (good genes), and why women are less concerned with a man's look, why men are more willing to have sex quickly and even to pay for it than women are, and that is why women usually are more pickier and take longer to convince to have sex. I can go on and on.

Once we understand this, then we can understand why men act the way they do, and why women act the way THEY do.

True enough, it takes a good man to say no. But they have to make that decision before they are presented with the choice.

So if a man whips his thing out I can go hop on it? Does it work the other way around, too? Or is it always women's fault? Because yes, women are hardwired to like men.

Well, thank you for your thought-out answer :).
I've always struggled with a very high sex drive, so I would not blame the guy necessarily for wanting it. I would though if he kept pressing the matter after I said no...
And I think you're right. I'm not a "slut" either, but I know some people who qualify and I don't think less of them. They're at a higher risk for STDs...So what. I don't go around hating on old people because they're at a higher risk for diseases. :D

We're only hardwired like men if we're at that really fertile "Oh my God I need to get knocked up NOW!" time, and the guy is really good-looking, healthy, fit, and has a good, strong personality. Or, he's just really good-looking, healthy and fit. Got to make those healthy babies, then find a sucker with worse genetic stock and maybe give him one or two kids that we won't care as much about, while he takes care of them and the important ones.

You have no concept of morality. The bible says sex is a sin, but god created it to propagate the species. This is just another obscene idea of morality we find in the bible. It is not immoral for consenting adults to engage in sexual activity, grow up.
