    Prison for petty drug offenders has just made the situation worse in many ways. A more nuanced approach of treatment and rehabilitation just seems like it would have more positive results than socially sanctioned rape and joining the same prison culture that holds violent offenders.

    Well I know religion or Atheism is not necessarily the answer either. Any religion, including Judaism and Christianity have flaws that don't necessarily correct addictive personalities

    I would add a third and definite option:

    Isaiah 61:1
    New International Version (NIV)
    The Year of the Lord’s Favor

    61 The Spirit of the Sovereign Lord is on me,
    because the Lord has anointed me
    to proclaim good news to the poor.
    He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted,
    to proclaim freedom for the captives
    and release from darkness for the prisoners,[a]

    Luke 4:16-21
    King James Version (KJV)
    16 And he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up: and, as his custom was, he went into the synagogue on the sabbath day, and stood up for to read.

    17 And there was delivered unto him the book of the prophet Esaias. And when he had opened the book, he found the place where it was written,

    18 The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised,

    19 To preach the acceptable year of the Lord.

    20 And he closed the book, and he gave it again to the minister, and sat down. And the eyes of all them that were in the synagogue were fastened on him.

    21 And he began to say unto them, This day is this scripture fulfilled in your ears.

    1 Corinthians 1:18-25
    King James Version (KJV)
    18 For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God.

    19 For it is written, I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and will bring to nothing the understanding of the prudent.

    20 Where is the wise? where is the scribe? where is the disputer of this world? hath not God made foolish the wisdom of this world?

    21 For after that in the wisdom of God the world by wisdom knew not God, it pleased God by the foolishness of preaching to save them that believe.

    22 For the Jews require a sign, and the Greeks seek after wisdom:

    23 But we preach Christ crucified, unto the Jews a stumblingblock, and unto the Greeks foolishness;

    24 But unto them which are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God, and the wisdom of God.

    25 Because the foolishness of God is wiser than men; and the weakness of God is stronger than men.

    Isaiah 53:1-7
    New International Version (NIV)
    53 Who has believed our message
    and to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?
    2 He grew up before him like a tender shoot,
    and like a root out of dry ground.
    He had no beauty or majesty to attract us to him,
    nothing in his appearance that we should desire him.
    3 He was despised and rejected by mankind,
    a man of suffering, and familiar with pain.
    Like one from whom people hide their faces
    he was despised, and we held him in low esteem.
    4 Surely he took up our pain
    and bore our suffering,
    yet we considered him punished by God,
    stricken by him, and afflicted.
    5 But he was pierced for our transgressions,
    he was crushed for our iniquities;
    the punishment that brought us peace was on him,
    and by his wounds we are healed.
    6 We all, like sheep, have gone astray,
    each of us has turned to our own way;
    and the Lord has laid on him
    the iniquity of us all.
    7 He was oppressed and afflicted,
    yet he did not open his mouth;
    he was led like a lamb to the slaughter,
    and as a sheep before its shearers is silent,
    so he did not open his mouth.

    Try expressing things using your own words. For instance, "everyone must be converted to Christianity and then run through bible study until the miraculous healing power of Jesus lifts the burden from them as he becomes Lord and Savior of their life," is a lot more direct, clear, and eloquent than quoting scripture without context or explanation.

    there is such a high rate of relapse that we might as well just commit them to a facility, give them all the drugs that they want unitl they OD. No point in letting them back out in society.

    Or we could just lock them in a room with their drug of choice and let nature take its course. Hopefully before they reproduce and further pollute the gene pool.

    Did you get that I have absolutely no sympathy for drug addicts?

    rehab within reason but serious recidivist criminals but be seen to be punished also, maybe like another voter has said 3 tries? its a big issue, it would need lots of research to make it work

    At least in prison they don't let you check out if you choose, but I do hear that drugs are very easy to obtain there, I don't know because rehab fails in many cases too.

    The rehabs they have for the poor is no more then a big room full of sick druggies that many have been reported to have died in from the lack of proper attention . Prisons I think should be used for criminals not victims .
