Is President Obama Responsible For the Solar Flares?

ProudProgressive 2012/03/08 23:26:09
If you listen to the Right Wing, you already know that President Obama is personally responsible for such things as Hurricane Irene, the east coast earthquake, and the Giants winning the Super Bowl. He's also responsible for high gas prices (not the international situation, not the speculators empowered by Republican deregulation of Wall Street, and certainly not the fact that we have more operating drilling rigs now than we had under the Bush Administration), but he had nothing whatsoever to do with turning a 750,000 jobs a month loss into two solid years of job gains and of course nothing to do with taking out Osama bin Laden.

So given this horrible nefarious history, is it that much of a stretch to think that the man the Right Wing always refers to as a "Messiah" could also control what happens on the Sun? After all, it's only 93,000,000 miles away.

Article excerpt follows:

Massive solar flare ripples sun's surface; storms speed to Earth
By Amy Hubbard
March 7, 2012

A powerful solar flare Tuesday evening caused the surface of the sun to shudder. A second smaller flare followed about an hour later, and the blasts caused by those flares have hurled a "big blob of magnetized material" toward Earth.

So says Alex Young, solar physicist at NASA Goddard, who spoke with The Times on Wednesday about the flares and their predicted impact.

The results of the coming geomagnetic storm may be pleasant -- auroras as far south as Illinois -- or unpleasant, such as GPS and communications problems, according to Young.

The first flare was the second largest of the current 11-year solar cycle, which began in 2008, with activity expected to peak next year, he said. The second was less impressive but also did its part in kicking up a storm.

"The main concern for space weather is the blast," or "coronal mass ejection," that follows a flare, Young said. That blast releases a huge amount of material into space -- solar plasma as well as ionized gas that contains a magnetic field.

On a scale of 1 to 5, Young said, the geomagnetic storm has been pegged at 2 or 3, moderate to slightly strong.

When the material from the coronal mass ejection hits the Earth's magnetic field -- or magnetosphere -- it causes the field to "ring like a bell," or oscillate, Young said. This generates electrical currents that move around in the upper atmosphere and, when strong enough, causes electrical currents on the ground.

That means possible disruptions in electricity distribution -- "severe storms can knock out power grids," Young said. GPS and radio communications can be affected, and electrical currents can even be picked up by oil pipelines, contributing to their corrosion.

The coronal mass ejection is expected to hit the Earth at about 1:30 a.m. Eastern time Thursday -- with a margin of error of plus or minus seven hours.

But if they're lucky, in the wee hours of Thursday morning, residents of northern New York and Idaho -- or even Illinois if the conditions are right -- could be treated to auroras, those colorful light displays in the nighttime sky that are usually confined to the high and low latitudes.

Why are solar flares even being discussed. They are nothing new and they have been going on for billions of years and they will continue going on for billions of years. There is nothing anyone can do about them.

Oh yeah, it is obvious this was written by one of those totally brain dead, left wing wackos.

If the man says that he's going to lower the sea levels and bring world peace within the space of his first term he should be able to control solar flares too. Just saying.

    No, he wasn't.

He was blamed, justifiably, for ignoring a lot of intelligence reports indicating the likelihood of the attack and which, in the hands of a competent administration would probably have led to stopping the attacks. He was blamed, justifiably, for his complete corruption and incompetence following the attacks when he lied us into a war that had nothing to do with the attacks and spent seven years doing everything he could to make sure that the man responsible for the attacks was not captured or killed.

He was also blamed, justifiably, (along with the governor of Louisiana and the mayor of New Orleans) for his utter failure to adequately deal with the AFTERMATH of Hurricane Katrina, but he was not blamed for Hurricane Katrina.

Hey, I'm on your side on this one. You're the one who thinks that everything in the world that isn't perfect is Obama's fault, and of COURSE Bush isn't responsible for anything - like the 9/11 attacks, the collapse of the American economy in 2007, the worldwide ridicule of the United States, and all that horrible stuff that is clearly Obama's fault even though he wasn't President at the time.

The 9/11 attacks which our intelligence services knew was coming and which Bush's response was to take a month long vacation rather than doing anything to try to stop it?

The collapse of the American economy that was the direct result of the Bush tax giveaways to millionaires and the Bush unfunded war of lies in Iraq?

Why would ANYONE blame George Bush for the fire just because he was the one holding all the matches?
  • Hawkeye ProudPr... 2012/03/09 01:50:20
    Hawkeye
There have been those who predicted a 9/11 type attack since the 70s.. Tom Clancy even had such an attack in one of his books from the ninties.. it wasn't the towers but it WAS a terrorist's attack on the Capital Building.. The point IS that KNOWING that something MIGHT happen and knowing WHERE are two different things.. And the TOWERS attack was called for and planned for during the Clinton Presidency by no less then bin Ladin himself as he watched Clinton get run out of Somalia.. The SAME bin Ladin that Clinton REFUSED to take custody of on THREE separate occasions..

It's AMAZING that 9/11 is ALL Bush's fault after only being President for 9 months yet after THREE YEARS Obama is STILL blammng Bush for HIS failures..

And the Bush Tax Cuts.. IF what you claim were true,, WHY is it that Obama EXTENDED those Tax Cuts until only recently.. fact IS,, at THIS point they're STILL in effect..

it STANDS to reason that if those Tax Cuts WERE the cause of the economic collapse then they wouldn't STILL be in place even after the economy has started on the road to recovery..

Your arguments are stale and tired and totally debunked by the facts at hand Progressive.. Time to get NEW talking points..

Just when Rush Limpbag is having some of the biggest problems of his weaselly career a solar storm just happens to occur to mess up people receiving his program?
