Is our drone war setting a dangerous precedent?

Imagine if North Korea or Iran or Venezuela deployed thousands of unmanned surveillance aircraft in search of earthbound enemies, a swarm of robotic hunters armed with lethal weaponry and their governments’ go-ahead to exterminate targets. It’s a frightening scenario but far from an unimaginable one, given that dozens of nations now build, program and deploy their own drones.

Newly disclosed U.S. guidelines on drone warfare appear to authorize a more permissive practice of targeted killings in the global fight against terrorism than previously articulated. And the Obama administration’s embrace of a right to strike those it has identified as threats to U.S. security has prompted warnings from rights advocates and international security experts that the White House is setting a dangerous precedent that rogue nations could follow.

The US drone policy is harming the US.

Military drones should only be used in countries we are officially at war with.

The war on terror should be declared ended. You can't have a war on a concept nor could their ever be a victories end. Certainly by any reasonable definition drones are a terror weapon. Would we like it if someone flew an aircraft into one of our buildings and blew it up. Why we'd probably go to war over that. We'd expect the world to brand the people who did it as war criminals. Seems like I'm forgetting something.

Our sanctimoniously pacifist president who deplores the "torture" and incarceration of terrorists in Guantanamo committed by a past Republican president is now playing Master of the World with his drones.

When I see some other country burning the American flag I would love to go to war and Obama and his administration embracing a fight to those it has identified as a threat to the US security has prompted warnings from rights advocates and international security experts that the White House is setting a dangerous precedent that rogue nations could follow.

Think about this for a moment. In the case of this cop killer... They branded him a terrorist so they can go after him with drones. He's a murderer. NOT a terrorist. This man killed 3 people he targeted. He mentioned he was going to go after the others involved. BUT he didn't blow up any public venues, nor did he go after people who were not involved with his beef. Is he a murderer...Absolutely. A terrorist... No way This is a line that should NEVER be crossed because if it is....what's next? killing a man with no due process is WRONG! The police that accidentally shot up that old woman's truck could be just as easily deemed the same!

Just like every other military advancement we've had. I'm sure violent crime skyrocketed after we invented the Pointed Stick.
Everything about drones is unsettling to think much about, but they're out of the box now.

No more of a precedent than all other technological advancements. I am not a fan of the current administration,so it is painful for me to agree with anything they do. But I have to agree that this is the safest method with the lowest amount of "collateral damage".

What is an alternative solution? Walk away?

Actually, it's a misnomer to call it "drone warfare." It would be more appropriate to call it "drone terrorism" since the drones kill far more innocent civilians than they do "terrorists."

Keep in mind that the CIA's Rules of Engagement allow them to consider any military-aged male a "Terrorist Suspect" and therefore, eligible to be murdered.

its far less dangerous than the "preemptive war" of bush2, and probably more legal. That's why bush2, Cheney and Rumsfeld have been convicted of war crimes.
  • norman Patent1 2013/02/11 21:25:24
    norman
The Bush regime did not enact a "preemptive war." They instigated a "preventive war."

Preemptive war is legal under international law if there's an imminent threat of attack. There was no threat from the Iraqis in 2003. They had no possibility of attacking the US.

Preventive war is always illegal under international law. Under the Nuremburg Rules, the greatest possible crime that can be committed is an illegal, aggressive war.

The fact that Bush and Co. were never prosecuted for war crimes is simply because the US is the dominate power in the world today. This doesn't lessen their crimes, it merely protects them from prosecution.

    Saddam:
    1. sponsored Islamic terr training camps in the Sudan begining in 1993.
    2. sponsored the 1993 bombing of the WTC
    3. sponsored the 1995 Oklahoma City Bombing, McVeigh was only an accessory, not a principal,
    4. had a bit part in 9-11. The hijackers trained on a Boeing 767 at the Baghdad airport.

    "The Third Terrorist:. Jayna Davis.
This book puts forth the case that 2 members of Saddam's Republican Guard were the principals and all McVeigh did was drive and park the truck that day and they didn't even trust him to do that alone. The engineer decided where the bomb would need to be placed for maximum damage and the size of the bomb needed and the other was the bombmaker. The bombmaker road with McVeigh to park the truck.

Read the book, I did about a year ago and it all made sense even though I had not heard of that info before.

The only reason bush n co haven't been prosecuted is that they have not left the US and visited any country where they could be grabbed and taken to a war crimes tribunal. There are a number of countries that have said they would immediately arrest bush, cheney and rumsfeld if they had the chance

this is not a yes or no issue. we will not know the full extent of the drones for years to come. so this defies a yes or no answer.
in the future this could be the slippery slope. all that said however for now i am in favor of
using drones to hunt and terrorisits.
reason is simple it kills them without risking us service men. with most terrorists you must kill them when the oppurtunity presents itself, if not they will strike and kill someone in due time.
then there is the issue of drones themselves, some one in the future will aquire these weapons and possibly use them on us, or worse yet we use them on ourselves.

nothing like automating warfare, no need to pay salaries and benefits for ground soldiers or hire private ground soldiers, won't even need war ships or planes. Just will need a few guys sitting behind a screen to observe, target and unsuspectingly blow someone or somebodies away...bye, bye...say good night, you won't even see it coming . just like that unsuspecting "threatening?" American in Yemen who steps out of a house gets in his white pick up, begins to drive away, and the truck suddenly explodes. What if we get a bunch of wacko, nearsighted, trigger happy idiots running the show? Coup de tates will become easier has countries are watched. I understand a drone went down in Iran and reverse engineering was done! Well Reagan wanted Star wars.... oh yeah from 50,000 feet up can zero in and describe the clothes you are wearing, can watch whole cities at one time on one screen and bring up many closer in smaller screens. Actually its pretty ingenious, so you wood warriors stockpiling a bunch of guns and ammo may just as well forget it! They have heat sensors too. Better behave! personally i do not mind for I have nothing to hide and I'm ID's. How about the free for all Mexican border crossings of thousands that goes on all day and night, AZ ranchers are getting sick of it! So much for Homeland Security....saw it on 60 minutes and another News Show....

Yes, except for the fact that there's no such thing as the "Liberal Left." There are Liberals, yes, and they definitely are silent about Obama's war crimes and drone terrorism program - disgustingly so.

But if you bothered to visit any real leftist sites (Truthdig, Information Clearing House, Alternet, etc.) you would quickly find that the left "screams and hollers" quite loudly about the drone terrorism and the rest of Obama's murderous programs, just as they did with the Bush regime's war crimes.

Since 1945, all American presidents have engaged in multiple war crimes - all of them.
