What is known is the Ahmadinejad was a leader of the Basiji, a group known for its self sacrifice during the Iraq/Iran war. That makes him not terribly different from Menachim Begin or Shimon Peres, who were leaders of groups who fought colonial occupation in Israel. Except that Begin and Peres were a bit more sedate in their speeches than the current Iranian leader.

The premise is false-- most US intelligence sources DO NOT believe that Iran intends to manufacture nuclear weaponry-- there are far too many difficulties inherent in reprocessing nuclear energy grade uranium into weapons grade.

If Iran wanted nuclear weapons-- they could have bought them from the Soviet black market long ago. Russia HAD their nukes for sale to the highest bidder.
