Very doubtful! There is an enemy among us who is very determined and we must dispell their myths! That always raises the hackles, but it must be done!

Politics is loaded with frauds and criminals of all sorts (example, most of congress are a bunch of insider traders), and the sheep of each party is out to protect their leaders of their parties at all costs. So when anyone points a finger at a criminal, a bloodthirsty battle detached from reality will ensue...

    Got to love tribalism.

Sister Jean, I'm not sure why you think that questions on politics on sodahead generate fights. I would agree that there are many posters who do not phrase their opinions in a calm, reasoned manner, and often use name-calling and such rather than a reasoned defense of their opinion. However, I have also had some good discussions with some posters, and have found some who do make good points and defend their opinions well on both the conservative and liberal side.

Perhaps I find it so because I am not wedded to one particular party view and try to think about all sides of an issue, to think about intended and unintended consequences.

People are passionate about politics, race and religion and I find that often its those things that people hold close to them that when challenged get heated.

It would be nice if people could just stick to a FACTUAL discussion of the issues. But a whole lot of people here on SH believe things that are false. And when their misinformation is disputed, they, believing the lies, think the other person is the one who is lying to them. They get mad at someone for lying, and the fight is on. If people could just approach things with an open mind, and do their research, perhaps it could become a civilized discussion, but I do not expect that to happen.

This country is so polarized, between those who want to revert back to following the Constitution and limit the power of gov't and those who want to exppand gov't so they will be taken care of from cradle to grave, despite what we see happening in Greece( what they opted for was the latter) People have very strong opinions and are amazed by others who see things differently. Doesn't make for peaceful conversations!

There is a difference between voicing an opinion, or correcting someone, and fighting. A large part of that difference can be deduced from tone and the words used to convey the information.

Yes, true, but too often people inject their own 'tone' into what they are reading, or read things in a tone that is not even intended.

Constantly. I try to be emotionally neutral, and people still read what they want into that; indeed for many people not being effusive with smiley emoticons is somehow a tone itself.

However, once you say "calm down, there's no tone in my post, re-read it" they should do so. By that point, however, they have already started a fight, and think it's "weakness" to back down, so off they charge.

"revert back to following the constitution.."??? Whatever you think about the "interpretations" of the US Constitution, it is the law of the land and the very basis of our form of government and our system of laws. Without it, this country would be chaos.

Sis,... I've been trying... and I'm the first to admit that I do get passionate over many replies. But when you constantly get label for what your not, it gets old.

For example. I'm not a Liberal. Yet because I disagree with conservative ideology, I'm label a Liberal.

I get the same thing constantly. Conservatives firmly believe that if you disagree with them, you must be a liberal. If you deny it, in only proves you're too stupid to realize how liberal you are!

I wanted to ask Contarded the same question but since at some point I blocked him, I'll ask you. What do you disagree with, in regards to the Conservative platform, but still consider yourself to be a conservative?

Shayes was the FIRST conservative to block me on my 2nd day in SH... She is the shining example of the topic in this poll. I stated an opinion, which obviously she didn't agree with, so she posted a nasty reply and blocked me.

And since she asked... I consider myself in only 2 categories. Human 1st and then American...

Liberal and Conservative aren't part of my definition in life.

Ooh okay, I was curious because your answer sounded to me like you were implying that you are a conservative and that you get the same ill treatment if you disagree with us. Sorry, your comment was a bit confusing. What did you mean by this comment and where do we disagree? Thanks!

You said: "I get the same thing constantly. Conservatives firmly believe that if you disagree with them, you must be a liberal. If you deny it, in only proves you're too stupid to realize how liberal you are!"

If you're not a liberal and you're not a conservative, then what are?

As for Contarded, to be honest, I don't even recall ever blocking him. But I do find it interesting that he knows "exactly" when I blocked him. ***scratching my chin***
I would venture to guess that whatever the reason was, whether I blocked him or he blocked me, I'm sure there was VERY good reason for me to do so. I suspect he's not as innocent as he's trying to make himself out to be. I'd sure like to know exactly what the conversation was about because I don't trust him.

"If you're not a liberal and you're not a conservative, then what are?"

I am a lifelong registered independent who votes libertarian ideals. The reason why I have serious trouble with the right in particular is that they promise "in their platform" to take away American's rights. I find that abhorrent, un-American, and even treasonous.

I understand your confusion, sadly most Americans only see left and right, and I am "often" obtuse in my postings! Here is a great website to learn more about the "true" political spectrum and your place in it.

    Take care!
