Is it politically correct to be rude or crude online, in political discussions? Have you ever written something that would make your mom mad?

“Never do or say something today that you would not want me to read about on the front page of the newspaper tomorrow," my mother warned me. Yet people online write things that make even me blush. Read my article below, and then come back to vote!

I have enough self-respect to not permit someone else to control how I behave. I will not hand over control of who I am in my own eyes to someone who writes something that reveals who they are.

When arguing with an idiot, make sure he is not doing the same thing.

Not only is it inapropiate it also shows a lack of control. First point if you have to verbally attack someone with a threat of violence, race, relegion. It means one or 2 things first you aren't totally prepared to answer or comment on the article written, or you do not have an answer and thru your frustration you attack.

People who have read my on-line comments know that I never resort to using the 'F' bomb, and rarely cross the common decency line, but when faced with a REALLY Stupid responder I do find myself forced to resort to comments that mom wouldn't exactly cheer, but I am certain she would understand when seen in the context of the discussion.

I have nothing to be ashamed of. ;o)

Lots of people forget that what is acceptable in a casual e-mail to a friend might not be acceptable in a discussion forum. I Never make a habit of attacking the person, instead focus on the topic. Relay opinions as opinions and facts as facts not the other way around. I tend to pay attention to spelling, grammar and punctuation. Many are appalled by the way others practice so poorly to communicate their feelings regarding interactive online activity, however so few choose to lead by example but instead wind up in a pissing contest (if you will) and nothing gets accomplished. Peace

My mom is a true American patriot. She doesn't like rudeness and didn't raise me to be rude. But she didn't raise me to be communist, socialist, or Marxist either. So in this case she weighs what's most important and says go for it - whatever it takes to stop this adminstration.

I agree with you. I am , or have been guilty of responding somewhat unkindly a couple times. But I do try not to attack the person, just the tone they have used on me. I`ve taken to , at the end of my comments to a vicious attacker, trying to explain that my response was in no way a personal attack on them.nor has there been any name calling, cursing,

Each of us can only strive to retain moral high ground when engaging in online debates, since each of us are probably also guilty of sinking to the lowest common denominator at various times.

My mom, bless her heart, just prays as she always has, as do I. But I ask myself WWJD and on that point I run into conflict with myself. First off I'm not Jesus, and second even his people faced war opposed to suppression,or enslavement. And they won.

I think that happens when the other party runs out of any thing constructive to add to their position. So they resort to the feeble attempt of intmidation. At that point you`ve won.the consistent,non-compromising position wins whether right or wrong. If I remember correctly,I picked this up from Ayn Rand discussing the compromise.I probably have it wrong, because I seem to recall also that she wrote that when the good,or correct side compromises with the bad or evil side, the bad wins. Because the good must give up part of it self to reach compromise. Conservatives have backed up, given in and compromised repeatedly. Now,here we are.

My late maternal grandmother was one of the most articulate people I have ever known. She told me, more than once, "If you must resort to vulgarity to express yourself, you have lost the argument and should keep your mouth shut."

I understand that in discussions of politics and sociology, our passions in our personal beliefs can often let emotionality "color our speech", especially when engaged with those whom we do not agree. This is rampant on a site like SodaHead, and I have seen this even among those whom I agree with and consider friends. I have even used profanity a time or two, though it is rare that you will see that from me in the public arena.

On a text based site where our ability to communicate effectively is 90% of our credibility, it is important that we try to avoid resorting to vulgarity or crudeness to make our points and support our arguments.

But, that's just me. If you argue with me and have to use vulgarity and crudeness to make your point, my opinion of you and your opinion will be significantly diminished.

Politics got nothing to do with it. It's never right to be rude and crude online or face to face. Regretfully I must admit of being guilty of it. I know it's wrong and Freedom of speech is wonderful indeed. But one should have the self-discipline and common courtesy toknow what is appropriate...........

It seems that your article is a partisan piece and that you haven't paid attention to your fellow conservatives who are hatriots, ie., haters of America and Americans, and who take every opportunity to discredit a democratically elected president, worship a woman who incites violence at her speeches and has her head in the sand (Palin), and throw out some pretty racist and hateful postings. So I don't take you seriously - but you would fit right in with the deceit of FOX channel which hide their propaganda behind what appears to be fair reporting.

I don't believe in PC; and will respond without courtesy to those who throw out BS, lies and deception. When people use critical thinking in responding to issues, then I find myself being able to respond in kind; but in general it is the RWingers on SH that throw out the BS and I find it satisfying to call them on their BS without restraint except that imposed by the SH moderators. I do not regret getting angry at stupidity.

Embarrass my Mother, hell she could make a sailor blush. I feel I express myself the way I choose, if a Liberal is making and ass of themselves, redundant I know, but I will point it out. I don't give a damn about being politically correct, I'm hardly ever politically correct, but I am always RIGHT! Political Correctness is just more Liberal bullshit that is ruining America. My mom always allowed me to express myself freely and although I am for the most part civilized in my dialog, I can get down to the nitty-gritty if I'm pushed to go there by individuals from EITHER side of the political spectrum. I am offended by very few debaters - and I usually end up pissing off whoever I'm debating with before they upset me.

I personally don't suscribe to the whole "politically correct" line because it is anti-free speech.
However, I do know that the truth does'nt benefit from foul language that is primarily a tool of people that cannot operate on an intelligent level.
Much like any other type of "jargon" it is used to mask one's ignorance of the subject or when scared by the facts in an argument.

Who gives a steaming pile what is politically correct? Fuck politicial correctness! Political correctness is for wussies who can't handle the truth. Political correctness is how the liberal thought-police silences those who dare to have a difference of opinion.
Politcal correctness is like trying to polish a turd, and call it a "Biological sculpture".
Political correctness teaches people that it's wrong to exhale, lest ye pollute the planet you were born on with your noxious fumes, yet you can make it all better by giving Al Gore more money. PC teaches people about those evil Christians, and how they oppress everybody with their beliefs, but glosses over the fact that in some Muslim countries women get their fingers chopped off for wearing nail polish (but that's just their culture, right?). PC say that voting against a black man, for any reason whatsoever, is racism, but voting for him just because of his race is not. PC is fucking retarded, end of story.

I don't believe in name calling. It's not productive. Let others show their bad manners. If you allow them to make you too defensive this doesn't end well. It only makes you look foolish as you carry on an exchange that deteriorates. I usually leave those exchanges pretty much alone. If I posted the blog I may remind people to keep it civil.
