Is It OK for Iran to Ban Women From 'Manly' College Courses?

File this under "extremely sexist and regressive." 36 universities in Iran announced that 77 college courses will be "single gender" only and available exclusively to men. The move, which has prompted a demand for a U.N. investigation, may be due to the fact that female Iranian students have outperformed men within the last few years in the academic arena. Do you think the news is just plain ridiculous?

THEDAILYBEAST.COM reports:
Female students in Iran have been barred from more than 70 university degree courses in an officially-approved act of sex-discrimination, which critics say is aimed at defeating the fight for equal women's rights.

The same with Christianity, however it hasn't gone away.

Women were, in the past, far more free to come & go from Iran. I am not as sure about the situation these days. It would appear things are changing... moving backward, it would seem.

Christianity almost did in Europe during the many wars( about which sect was right). The problem now is that weapons are so much better it will be much worse.

Well, I would submit that is the very reason that the US should abandon all thoughts of dictating to other nations (including Arab nations) what they should/shouldn't do & make business relationships instead. No one wants to destroy a nation it makes money from. We are in business with Saudi Arabia & it has one of the worst human rights records on Earth. Why can't we do business with Iran as well?
I'm all for buying cheap oil from Iran & leaving our reserves alone... better for our land, air & water & better for our future (because we could actually have oil & gas when the rest of the world doesn't). But, of course, we are a nation of NOW, immediate gratification rules the day. Profits must be made today, not tomorrow & our land, air & water be damned... along with the heath & well being of The People.

While that amount of water may seem hugh it is not, many areas get 2 feet of rain every year that is roughly 50 million cubic feet per square mile, and a cubic foot is about 8 gallons.

Indeed, it was the Thirty Years' War which resulted in the secularization of Europe. I like the way Abdal-Hakim Murad put it, when he describe secular modernity as "the nuclear winter of the Reformation".

Why should we care about what they are allowing or not allowing. We are having enough trouble right here in the United States with taxes and death. Let other countries do their own thing, and we can do ours.

Yes, the country is Iran, and is run by an Islamist male-dominated government!

It isn't any of our business how Iran chooses to run their country. This is just another example of how intolerant Islam is as a religion, and that people who don't know about Islam should read the words that are in the Qur'an and get educated about it. Then they will also find out that Islam is not a religion of peace either!

I don't think you answered the question. Why should limitations be put on anyone, especially those with different plumbing and a cushy chest? If you were a woman in Iran, would you desire so much to get past a culture/country/religion/politic that puts you in a open prison because of that? If not you don't appear to have a functioning conscience.

I did answer the poll question, LoungeKat!

Now I will answer your questions: I don't think limitations be put on anyone, regardless of their plumbing technology nor chest characteristics. And if I were a woman in Iran, I wouldn't care for the legal system which imprisons women for some of the actions which are illegal in Iran. So, if you imply that I may not "have a functioning conscience", that is your misconception. I hope that my answers to your questions will correct that error.

And I raved your reply to me, even though you didn't rave my answer to the poll question!

    Ok.

...Well then, why pose the question in the first place if you feel that way?

What is the reasoning behind what someone should do or should not based on gender alone?

I also have the choice to rave or not to rave. I don't give my raves to everyone and I do not obligate anyone to do the same. Is it to get points that this website offers, or to really make a difference in the world?

The fact that there's even banter between us should suffice.

I also feel that these 'devils advocate' questions similar to yours should be obsolete, because people still needlessly suffer and it somehow gives one room to justify certain behaviors. I don't know if you noticed that...I'm just saying.

The rusty wrench of dysfunctional gender roles that have been shoved down the throats of every living being for the longest time are being taken out of the cog of humankind piece by piece.

It is obvious that people are realizing more and more every day that everyone is due equal treatment, so that each individual will see and own their own power, intelligence physical, mental, emotional strength, spiritual heritage and are worthy of success and opportunities by divine right.

First of all, I didn't pose the question, somebody named AdriHead did. So, I don't quite understand your remark about "these devils advocate questions similar to yours", since I didn't pose any questions here. People needlessly suffer all over the world, and I feel sorry for them, but it's none of our business to tell other governments how they should run their countries. We should just set the best example that we can for others to emulate. On that note, there are a lot more people trying to get into this country than are trying to leave it to live in other countries!

I agree with you about the rave business. When I first joined SodaHead many years ago, there was no such thing (and no point crap either). I was just interested in joining interesting conversations and read what other people had to say about things. Now I just fell into the "raving" habit simply because a lot of people have raved things that I posted, so I raved them back when I saw a post that they made.

And, anywhere the primary religion is Islam, such as Iran, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, etc. women's rights will progress very slowly. However, I had a 34 year career at a major company headquartered in Dearborn, Michigan, and that city had the largest concentration of Muslims in the U.S. The women in that area have made as much (or greater) progress as women anywhere else in the U.S.

I hate to belabor a point, but goblue1968 did answer the question, they checked Yes. I, on the other hand, have checked neither option. I'm just jumping in and expressing my views by responding to others' comments.
But since we're on the subject: I don't agree with their policy, but I also agree with goblue that it's none of my business; just like it's none of my business what you do in your bedroom, with whom you do it, nor whom you choose to marry.

"It's not right" is my personal, moral belief. Keyword is "personal."
That's what the question was asking, my personal opinion on the matter.

Also, I'm not saying the citizens don't want this, they may, but again, just because it's what some government heads want, doesn't mean it's what their people want, and doesn't necessarily mean it's what is right for their country.

A lot of us do take it for granted, and most of the younger Americans take it for granted no question, however that's our own fault.

It is blatant sexism. Why should gender even come into it? Both Males and Females are equally capable at being great at any course or subject, whether it's Beauty, Woodwork or Sport. To say women can't complete a course any other man would find easy is Discrimination, and the fact it is approved by the Government makes it all the worse.

People must give sufficient options. if not then others should not complain about the option chosen.
