Is It OK for Iran to Ban Women From 'Manly' College Courses?

File this under "extremely sexist and regressive." 36 universities in Iran announced that 77 college courses will be "single gender" only and available exclusively to men. The move, which has prompted a demand for a U.N. investigation, may be due to the fact that female Iranian students have outperformed men within the last few years in the academic arena. Do you think the news is just plain ridiculous?

THEDAILYBEAST.COM reports:
Female students in Iran have been barred from more than 70 university degree courses in an officially-approved act of sex-discrimination, which critics say is aimed at defeating the fight for equal women's rights.

It is discrimination and sexism, there are hardly any rights for women over in the middle east. It is appalling.

Where are NARAL , NOW, and the Gloria's (Steinham and Alred) when you need them?

Oh yeah- they are handling the important things- such as no free condoms for women- they don't have time for the trivial actual discriminatory things

It is a matter of human rights. Slavery here was not okay, just because it was protected by law.

Of course not!! But I'm not surprised... there's still a lot of sexism in Iran. I can't imagine how terrible it is to be a woman born into that kind of place... proud to NOT be an Iranian citizen....

(FYI: these rules are based on gender, not race, creed or color.)

I believe that principle is true for America.
I believe that other nations have other ideas.
Do I believe that it is "moral" or "ethical" for governments to determine which subjects are forbidden to women or men?
    hrmmm...
I think it depends on the nation. Various nations have their policies for various reasons.
I do not believe it is okay for me (or anyone else) to force my ideals down the throat of anyone else... just as I do not believe it is okay for anyone else to force their ideals down my throat.

I can say with complete honesty that I do not like such policies. I do not agree with them. I believe that education is a human right & that all subjects should be open to study by anyone who chooses to study them.
However, I am not one to dictate to other nations what is best or right for them.

How far can they go to oppress women for you to think they have gone too far, or are they allowed to do what they want, 100%?
What if it was black slavery? Would that be okay with you?

The Iranians have already surpassed the bounds of misogyny and sexism, but I believe that Iran can do what it wants. It isn't up to me to chastise Iran for its mistreatment of citizens; that's the UN's job.
Black slavery? Tens of millions of blacks are enslaved throughout Africa. It wouldn't be okay if it happened in my country, but it's happening in African nations and out of my hands. Until the UN intervenes, those issues will continue in those regions.

    Really?
When the mega-wealthy are in control, how does one fight a plutocracy? They are already removing our most vital tools of legal rebellion & are attempting at every turn to remove every other tool we have to rebel. Our constitutional protections are being removed with bipartisan votes.
We're already in deep enough that it might be too late to reverse the situation.

What does that have to do with this topic? Nothing.

That, and I wouldn't worry too much about the "anti-gay marriage laws here. At least they are free to do as they please. At least they do not have to hide who they are and if they do open themselves up, they're dead.

The issue is NOT that they're Islamic; it's that they're a theocracy. The same sort of things have occured elsewhere, that's why our founding fathers put 'no state religion' in the Constitution, and also why they so vociferously denied the the USA was founded on the Christian ethic.

No, Islamic means "to give ones' will to Allah". According to Islam, Allah offered free will to everything in creation, only humans were dumb enough to take up the offer. Therefore a squirrel behaves as it does because it is Allahs' will that the squirrel behave thus. Likewise, a rock behaves the way it does because it has given its' will to Allah. One may be Islamic, and in no way a theocracy. I hope this clears things up.

Does that mean that islamic means that humans should give up their free will and behave like a squirrel or a mindless rock?

You're being obtuse on purpose, right? No, it means if you're truly Islamic you're trying to Gods' will. You (presumably) have free will, so if you don't feel like it, you needn't always try to do Gods' will. You might, for instance, fly jetliners into skyscrapers, rob banks, do anything that probably isn't Gods' will. Now, let me beat you to your next rebuttal: Those who destroyed the World Trade Center were no more doing Allahs' will than the Crusaders were doing Gods work when they indiscriminately slaughtered the inhabitants of Jerusalem. Just because I say I'm having sex with Heather Locklear doesn't mean I really am (though I'm willing to discuss the possibility with her).

Too bad not very many of the so-called "Christians" in America realize that & instead insist that "American values" include some sort of Christian belief (preferably one that is inline with their own).

Though I do not agree with many of the ideas withing the Tea Party, I support wholeheartedly the upstarting of new "parties" in America. There are vast numbers of The People who are unrepresented by the two big hateful-propaganda-spewing power-mongers. I believe we need more & better representation in the US, not less.
Though there are quite a few irrational extremists in the Tea Party, I haven't seen any of them wandering around with AKs, growing/harvesting opium to finance their movement or walking into city halls or councils with their AKs & taking over (which, I must say, might actually one day be necessary in America if we continue the Plutocratic path we're currently on... but not yet). It is true, however, that some of its members are guilty of strong-arming, threatening & otherwise intimidating people, which is a very big reason I am not a fan.
All the same, I very much support the premise of more voices in America.

Glad your comment gives me the opportunity to comment also....Those choices.....should have includeded a third. I couln't chose 1 or 2........
It's their country and they SHOULD DO WHAT THEY WANT....I'm not getting into the middle anymore......but if it is in this country....that's when I feel I am entitled to an opinion.

As long as Iran is a MUSLIM country it will be this way....Nothing you can say, no opinion, nor
debate will change the way they are.....Living in 1400 A.D. controlling their people by
their radical ideas. If the Quran says it.....it will be their ideology and lifestyle.
