File this under "extremely sexist and regressive." 36 universities in Iran announced that 77 college courses will be "single gender" only and available exclusively to men. The move, which has prompted a demand for a U.N. investigation, may be due to the fact that female Iranian students have outperformed men within the last few years in the academic arena. Do you think the news is just plain ridiculous?
THEDAILYBEAST.COM reports:

THEDAILYBEAST.COM reports:
Female students in Iran have been barred from more than 70 university degree courses in an officially-approved act of sex-discrimination, which critics say is aimed at defeating the fight for equal women's rights.

Thecharliejay 2012/08/29 01:12:54No+10It is discrimination and sexism, there are hardly any rights for women over in the middle east. It is appalling.

But seriously all education should be available to anyone who wants it. Period.
PLUS, aren't we supposed to be culturally sensitive to other countries and not force our opinions and morals on them. Aren't all cultures equal? Who are we to say that our way is better, since supposedly there are no moral truths- only situational ethics.
I grew up with an Iranian student from Hillsdale College who stayed with my parents over Holidays and Summer Break. The Iranian people are well educated, proud and incredibly hard working. They have had their country hijacked by crappy leaders who have taken away any semblance of a Democratic society. The mullahs, imams and Ayotollahs are brutal in their rule over an amazing citizenry. Almost the entire population is so similar to us, you wouldn't recognize any difference between "us" and "them". But the rulers trout out their version of the 1% and make it seem like the whole country hates the United States. Not true. Their women are articulate, well educated and ambitious for a better life. The theocracy knows that they must keep everyone, especially women, under thumb to keep power.
Iran is rich, well educated and all they need is a chance. A real chance for democracy, dare I even say a Republic, to transform the Mideast for the good. I pray for the people under a horrible rule. (No, to answer the OP, it is no OK to restrict women from taking classes for any reason.)
Iran DOES NOT have any REAL "men" anyhow....
However, I would say that in the US, the radical Christians have a great tendency to do whatever it takes to destroy a person who has an opposing view/opinion, whether it's with shame & ostracizing, public ridicule or spreading of out & out lies. Sometimes these actions end up in suicide. Now. Isn't that a form of murder?
Religions are incredibly destructive. They use group-think & mobbing to manipulate, coerce & destroy people. One's spiritual beliefs are one's private affair & there is no need for dogma or the forming of ritualistic clubs in order to feel/believe in a spiritual concept. I like to say that I don't need some guy in a dress telling me right from wrong.
I do not necessarily believe that rational thinking has much of a chance in government in the US... maybe society either, at least not in many areas of our nation. Maybe more of a chance than in Iran, maybe not. But the American society is truly a mess... as much of or more of a mess than many places in the world regarding religion.
If/When Romney gets in (gawd help us), it will be official.
Were we to have a shred of hope of survival, we'd have ALL backed Ron Paul.
"Finally standing up for themselves" is quite a silly thing to say about the women of Iran.
I would argue that it is you who doesn't understand the situation.
