Is It OK for Iran to Ban Women From 'Manly' College Courses?

File this under "extremely sexist and regressive." 36 universities in Iran announced that 77 college courses will be "single gender" only and available exclusively to men. The move, which has prompted a demand for a U.N. investigation, may be due to the fact that female Iranian students have outperformed men within the last few years in the academic arena. Do you think the news is just plain ridiculous?

THEDAILYBEAST.COM reports:
Female students in Iran have been barred from more than 70 university degree courses in an officially-approved act of sex-discrimination, which critics say is aimed at defeating the fight for equal women's rights.

It is discrimination and sexism, there are hardly any rights for women over in the middle east. It is appalling.

First of all what is a 'manly' college course? Penis weight lifting? Teabagging class? If they are offering courses like that I wouldn't want to go their college anyway!

But seriously all education should be available to anyone who wants it. Period.

Iran is Iran, they can do what they want to their people until the people decide to revolt. Wait, they tried that and Obama turned his back on them. Nevermind. Let me ask my President what the proper policy towards Iran should be.

Providing the institution gets NO Federal funds, Yes! Of course I nor anyone else on this site has any comments that will be listened to by Iran! IF they don't listen to our President making a fool out of himself in trying, why would they listen to us here on Soda Head? :(

Well of course this is OK. We here in the States have Black only colleges and all female colleges. That's progress, right?

PLUS, aren't we supposed to be culturally sensitive to other countries and not force our opinions and morals on them. Aren't all cultures equal? Who are we to say that our way is better, since supposedly there are no moral truths- only situational ethics.

You completely missed the point, the women are banned from particular classes and can't learn them in a female school bc they are too manly and results in less babies

You are probably correct. My honest opinion and feelings about Iran and their people:

I grew up with an Iranian student from Hillsdale College who stayed with my parents over Holidays and Summer Break. The Iranian people are well educated, proud and incredibly hard working. They have had their country hijacked by crappy leaders who have taken away any semblance of a Democratic society. The mullahs, imams and Ayotollahs are brutal in their rule over an amazing citizenry. Almost the entire population is so similar to us, you wouldn't recognize any difference between "us" and "them". But the rulers trout out their version of the 1% and make it seem like the whole country hates the United States. Not true. Their women are articulate, well educated and ambitious for a better life. The theocracy knows that they must keep everyone, especially women, under thumb to keep power.

Iran is rich, well educated and all they need is a chance. A real chance for democracy, dare I even say a Republic, to transform the Mideast for the good. I pray for the people under a horrible rule. (No, to answer the OP, it is no OK to restrict women from taking classes for any reason.)

Of course it's not alright but every country must progress by themselves. The US didn't want to be under British rule so we had a revolution. And yet it took us almost 100 years to but an end to slavery.

Rational minds still have a chance here, in a true theocracy, like Iran, if you try to fight the religious order you will be killed.

It might be true that rebellion in Iran will lead to death. I would buy that.
However, I would say that in the US, the radical Christians have a great tendency to do whatever it takes to destroy a person who has an opposing view/opinion, whether it's with shame & ostracizing, public ridicule or spreading of out & out lies. Sometimes these actions end up in suicide. Now. Isn't that a form of murder?
Religions are incredibly destructive. They use group-think & mobbing to manipulate, coerce & destroy people. One's spiritual beliefs are one's private affair & there is no need for dogma or the forming of ritualistic clubs in order to feel/believe in a spiritual concept. I like to say that I don't need some guy in a dress telling me right from wrong.

I do not necessarily believe that rational thinking has much of a chance in government in the US... maybe society either, at least not in many areas of our nation. Maybe more of a chance than in Iran, maybe not. But the American society is truly a mess... as much of or more of a mess than many places in the world regarding religion.

Different culture and Iran's sovereign right to do as they please. If people are unhappy with the way things are in that country, they can visit the nearest U.S. Embassy and apply for asylum.

Persia has had the most liberal women's rights in the Middle East for decades. They have women in government & most women are quite highly educated.
"Finally standing up for themselves" is quite a silly thing to say about the women of Iran.

Ummmm........did you even understand the question?? Women are banned from 77 college courses reserved exclusively for men. You're way off on a different subject. It isn't about whether or not they're educated or have gov't jobs......it's about whether or not they are going to continue to accept being banned from courses reserved for males. It's about continued sexism in that culture. Wake up.

The idea that you said "Women over there are FINALLY STARTING to stand up for themselves," is opposite of reality. They have always been educated. They have always been more advanced than the Arabic nations. I am arguing that the women of Iran have stood up for themselves for a hell of a long time. It would seem that things are starting to go backward as opposed to continuing to progress.

I would argue that it is you who doesn't understand the situation.
