Is It OK for a Child to Have More Than Two Parents?

California Democrats want to increase the number of parents a child can have. SB 1476 would allow a child to have more than two parents at the same time in order to accommodate same-sex parents, surrogates, assisted reproduction, and other non-traditional parental relationships.

SacBee.com reports: Mom and Dad, same-sex couples or blended families, California law is clear: No more than two legal parents per child. State Sen. Mark Leno is pushing legislation to allow a child to have multiple parents.

"The bill brings California into the 21st century, recognizing that there are more than Ozzie and Harriet families today," Leno said. But some disagree. "It comes as no surprise that he would try to say that a child has more than two parents – that's absurd," said Benjamin Lopez, a legislative analyst for Traditional Values Coalition, a Bible-based civil rights group.

SacBee points out potential problems and complexities caused by SB 1476:
Tax deductions, citizenship, probate, public assistance, school notifications and Social Security rights all can be affected by determinations of parenthood, notes the Association of Certified Family Law Specialists.

Examples of three-parent relationships that could be affected by SB 1476 include: 1) A family in which a man began dating a woman while she was pregnant, then raised that child with her for seven years. The youth also had a parental relationship with the biological father. 2) A same-sex couple who asked a close male friend to help them conceive, then decided that all three would raise the child. 3) A divorce in which a woman and her second husband were the legal parents of a child, but the biological father maintained close ties as well. How do you feel about the proposed bill?

just beacuse theyre not biological pparents doesnt mean they cant be a parent.

like a step parent can become close to the kid to be a parent.
what difference does it make? some kids dont have any and would kill for even one, let alone have more than two

Anybody using common sense realizes this has been the norm for years. Divorce, remarriage, foster parents, etc, all have forced a child to having more than two parents when upbringing is concerned. Heck, we even include school administration as sub-parents to our kids and there the first to blame when a kid as a problem. This law in California, I'm sure only addresses the physical relationship of parents to a child and their rights as conceiving parents, but was not to address the upbringing of the child. That being impossible due to situation.

Conservatives are making a mountain out of a mole-hole, only because of their anti-gay marriage views. There's no reason not to update a legal document, that when written, didn't include the possibles of divorce, remarriage, gay marriage, foster parenting, all including the legal rights to more than two people parenting a child.. Stupid on the part of the bill writers and nonsense on the part of those opposing its change.

We've already tried Liberal way, it has failed.

American children are now at the bottom of western education and more children are ending up in prison than at anytime in history.

I disagree that the current state of education and prison population is solely the fault of Liberals, especially when you consider that in the past 40 years, we've only had a liberal in the highest office in the nation for all of 16 years.

My take as to why education fails? Our kids go to school for 180 days a year while others go 210-240. That adds up and creates a deficit of knowledge that isn't made up. I don't think vouchers are the answer, but I don't think teachers should be able to hide behind tenure either. A 210-day school year with 8 subjects would be conducive to helping kids get a well-rounded education.

As for the ever-increasing prison population, you can thank lobbyists from the private prison industry for influencing lawmakers to push for mandatory minimum sentences so they can house prisoners with your tax dollars. Law enforcement used to confiscate drugs and be done with the "perp", now some states have MMS for first-time possession.

What liberal, education, prison have in common with this law makes little sense. The problems you mention are related to poverty and the social environment it invites. Money creates a strong social and family structure and provides the quality education needed to stay out of prison. Drugs are another matter, rich or poor, the leading cause to a growing prison population, not stupidity or parental upbringing.

It is not biologically possible, unless of course Congress has assumed the authority to change the laws of nature.

Actually it IS biologically possible. Bioengineering has already made it possible for a mammal to have more than one father. DNA from one sperm is grafted into another. They are using this technique for animal breeding today. It is probably a short time before this technology will be used on humans to prevent genetic diseases.

Also there is the case of surrogate mothers. A fertilized human egg, from a biological father and mother, is implanted into a woman who carries it to term. This child has two mothers and a father. This procedure is in use now.

So the grafter, the donor, the surrogate is automatically a parent, really? No, that is not current law. If they want to do that, they have biological rights and should be allowed to draw up such a contract. However, some broad based law giving them all equal rights would really complicate it if the intention was only to use them as a donor.

Actually, it is biologically possible. Infertile couples and couples who have genetic defects and gays use this technology, which has become far more advanced than just going to a sperm bank. When these couples break up or the donors seek rights or the ones getting the donations seek child support, they become complicated for Courts to deal with. Applying some broad based law giving all of them and step-parents (presumably married ones) equal rights to biological and adoptive parents would most likely be a big mistake though.

Anything is "possible", but are there any people alive today with more than two parents?
  • Live Fr... Rusty S... 2012/07/05 21:07:24
    Live Free Or Die
There are hundreds of thousands in the U.S. with three biological parents. The many different ways this can be achieved is presenting legal and ethical challenges to the Courts.

Then there are the step-parents and multiple divorces...

Can we assume that DNA tests will show three parents?
  • Live Fr... Rusty S... 2012/07/06 00:34:52
    Live Free Or Die
In some cases no. Some argue that a surrogate carrying another couple's embryo is to some extent a "biological" parent absent the DNA.

Please identify what normal means. That's all I've seen on here. Is that the only excuse you have? It's not 'normal'? Divorces happen all the time, therefore there becomes four parents. It's not a matter if they're your biological kids, it's a matter of loving and caring for them. Who needs a court to tell a kid who their parents are? If that was the case, adoption would be hypocritical. But it isn't. It's beautiful and I hope this Earth does change, because obviously there are still people who are stuck in what 'NORMAL' is.

NAMBLA asked the same question, "What is normal....."

It seems you agree with NAMBLA, according to your logic anything goes. Hell, every sicko in the world uses your logic.

Normal is what society dictates and the price society is willing is pay. Because it is society the bears the consquences of depravity and bad laws.

We have seen what Liberalism has done to the American family, it has destroyed it. Today kids are not only the worst educated in Western Society, but the rate at which children are going to prison and/or becomimg victims of predators has skyrocketed under Liberalsim.

Yes,it's ok! It takes a whole community to raise a child or children. Meaning everyone look out for each other children in the community and correct them when they are doing wrong. Whether your the same sex or heterosexual think of the child or children and stop being so traditional, nothing stays the same. Change comes with growth! All children just want to be "Loved" that's all should matter!

I won't say yes in all situations. And I don't believe that the tax deductions should go to any more than two.... However, think of the (very common) scenario where one- or both- parent(s) re-marry. There will be times that the new, step-parent will have to make legal, or medical decisions, etc....
