I answered this to get my stats that appear above the answer choices,, in the "How Did People Like You Vote?" section. Out of 36 votes 28(78%) were "No", of which 100% athiest. Google is just full of crap. They relate one trend affecting a reality when it doesn't. What if the opposite is true. People of religion looking up "atheism" to understand it, are now atheists and no longer need to look it up. I've been an atheist for a long and have never had a need to google it, because I know where I stand. Just because you see a bright light, doesn't mean it's the sun, it could be someone with a flashlight to show you the path in the darkness.

The statistic that matters is that atheism is the fastest growing "religion" in the world.

No, it's actually the highest growing minority. In fact, at this rate, 1 in 4 Americans will profess atheism in 20 years. As more and more atheist groups and famous freethinkers are shouting it from the rooftops, more people with religious upbringings are questioning religious doctrine. And so the number grows, and so it will continue to grow.

people religious upbringings questioning religious doctrine number grows continue grow

A Google search might mean a lot to Internet citizens who want to keep up with the population, but it means little in reality. Searching for terms like "atheism" and "Richard Dawkins" doesn't make you an atheist yourself, just as searching for terms like "Jesus" and "the bible" doesn't make you a Christian.

Don't know where you're getting your data but the largest growing group when it comes to religious preference is Atheists. Their growth rate has been over 9% since 1999 through 2009.

No, it is actually flourishing in the modern era. Looking at a 1 month trend is bogus. Instead you should be looking at decades of searches, books published, etc.

Web traffic to a site like Dawkins' are going to fluctuate due to news coverage and the length of time since releasing his last book, like any other author. One-word Google searches aren't the norm and aren't really very statistically valid, in my opinion. The wider scope of years presented on Trends (going back to 2004) shows they've stayed about the same.

No, I am an atheist and I see many others online at different sites including SH.
Church attendance is declining all over America. People may identify themselves as Christian or Jewish etc. but they do not participate in their places of worship nor do they contribute to them.
I think that eventually atheism or other alternative religions like Buddhism, Paganism etc will become more popular since they are more relevant to spiritual life today.

The goodle graphs work by using certain words. These graphs just mean people aren't using google to search the word atheism/atheist. That doesn't mean much else.

Trying to gauge global interest in something by looking at a few years' worth of Google keyword usage is building conclusions on quicksand.
  • ☆ElenaD... RogerCo... 2012/07/11 20:52:02 (edited)
    ☆ElenaDiamond☆
Not really. Google is a good indicator in where interest lies. For example:

Note, the trend on American Idol gets lower every year along with the ratings I might add.
