Is Hugging, Cuddling, and Holding Hands 'Gateway Sexual Activity'?

What's the best way to prevent teen pregnancy? That's up for debate, but according to Tennessee lawmakers, preventing teens from hugging might be a start. The state just passed a bill allowing the parents of students to bring charges against teachers who condone "gateway sexual activity," an unclear term which has been the subject of much criticism. Some suggest the law could bring charges against teachers for allowing students to hold hands, dance too closely, or -- worse yet -- hug.

Planned Parenthood took a stance against the bill, and the organization's Director of Education said, "If the state of Tennessee gets to create the [sex] curriculum, it has to create something that umbrella reflects everyone." However, Tennessee is unique in that teen sex rates are higher there than the national average. According to a 2009 study, 61 percent of Memphis City high school students and 27 percent of middle school students have had sex. But does that mean holding hands should be banned? And is it even a "gateway sexual activity" to begin with?

Yes! Add to that walking, talking, touching, seeing, breathing, and being human. I believe they are all gateways to sexual activity.

    Hugging is the devil's work!

These arguments make me laugh. Teens must be stopped from getting pregnant at all costs, and if they do get pregnant, must not be permitted to have an abortion.

This would be a good poll for the returning soldiers who have been fighting the Taliban.

I have heard that many construction companies that specialize in constructing gateways and doorways and landscaping with paths have been seen doing the above mentioned activity, but on their own time so I don't worry about it. Only the very young workers seem to target teens for pregnancy sometimes.

Ive got the perfect solution. Plastic bubbles with locks on them. Let the parents keep the key til the kids are grown and about to get married and let the parents bounce them down the aisle. When the wedding march song is over. Pop the bubble with a really big pin. Bam, no more teen pregnancy. The locks of course to slip food in and all.

EXACTLY. Being BORN is a gateway. Being ALIVE is a gateway. Having reproductive organs is a gateway.

What it boils down to - take away everything we've evolved to and send us back to caveman days - we're born to mate and procreate. As are our children and their children. Simple as that.

I wanna know just how many of these folks were sexually active as teens. Sorry, but Bob Seeger's "Night Moves" was an anthem for those of us that grew up in the 60s and 70s and I 'm certain several of these interfering bozos are part of that generation.

A strong conviction that something must be done is the parent of many bad measures.

I don't think these lawmakers in Tennessee are pc liberals. They sound more like right-wing conservatives with Victorian values.

Actually, their legislature is comprised primarily of Republicans. 64 out of 99 members of their House are Republicans, and 20 out of 33 members of their Senate are Republicans. So you're putting the blame on the wrong party here!

But some sex is better than none, would you agree? I mean, if I was in love with a really hot woman, say someone like you, I just can't imagine life without sex. I'd want to do it quite often, and for quite a while each time. Just saying.

The topic was about teenagers and second I feel that intimacy between two people does not always lead into sex.
It is important that we teach teenagers the difference : )

There is a distinction but it's between love and intimacy, not between intimacy and sex. You can be in love without being intimate but, without sex there is no intimacy.
