Is Hugging, Cuddling, and Holding Hands 'Gateway Sexual Activity'?

What's the best way to prevent teen pregnancy? That's up for debate, but according to Tennessee lawmakers, preventing teens from hugging might be a start. The state just passed a bill allowing the parents of students to bring charges against teachers who condone "gateway sexual activity," an unclear term which has been the subject of much criticism. Some suggest the law could bring charges against teachers for allowing students to hold hands, dance too closely, or -- worse yet -- hug.

Planned Parenthood took a stance against the bill, and the organization's Director of Education said, "If the state of Tennessee gets to create the [sex] curriculum, it has to create something that umbrella reflects everyone." However, Tennessee is unique in that teen sex rates are higher there than the national average. According to a 2009 study, 61 percent of Memphis City high school students and 27 percent of middle school students have had sex. But does that mean holding hands should be banned? And is it even a "gateway sexual activity" to begin with?

Yes! Add to that walking, talking, touching, seeing, breathing, and being human. I believe they are all gateways to sexual activity.

But the fact that the kids are maturing make it hard for them not to notice and react to each other. No rules can change that.

But Tennessee politicians were educated in a conservative environment that ranks at the bottom of the educational barrel for the country. What do you expect?

"The state dropped from 45th to 46th in the nation in fourth-grade math; from 39th to 41st in fourth-grade reading; from 43rd to 45th in eighth-grade math; and from 34th to 41st in eighth-grade reading. Also according to the results, 26 percent of fourth-grade students are proficient in reading, and 30 percent are proficient in math. Twenty-seven percent of eighth-grade students are proficient in reading, while 24 percent are proficient in math."

But such vague language in bills is likely to cause great mischief. Other vague legislation such as ObamaCare and Dodd-Frank Too-Big-to-Fail or the Sherman Anti-Trust Act have all caused terrible problems.

Laws need clear definitions, not definitions which vary depending on the opinion of the person charged with enforcing it.

Sometimes just seeing another person can give way to sexual urges, or the sound of someone's voice, their unique smell as they pass by, or the way they look as the breeze brushes against their hair. Until the actual sex takes place anything about another person may excite one's sex drive. Love at first sight is not fiction, it occurs every day in schools, at work, in a restaurant or anywhere else people are.

If Tennessee were to pass this law they will become the next laughing stock of the USA. That, and the near fact that the law would be thrown out in a federal court, thus causing a cash strapped state to uselessly spend tax payer money in defense of it. Kids will be kids and teens will be teens. I believe it was Socrates or maybe Plato who said something like: I do not understand the youth of today. They listen to strange music, dress in their own fashion, ignore rules imposed on them, sass their parents and intermingle in inappropriate ways. I did not put this in quotation marks because I can only remember the gist of it.

    Holding hands? Hugging? Seriously?!

((However, I will be the first to admit that I wouldn't mind a stop to people making out with their significant others in front of their lockers. We all know how much you love each other, but eww.))

Hugging, cuddling, and holding hands are expressions of love and caring. These are expressions I share with my children and grandchildren every day and I hug my friends
whenever I see them as an expression of warmth and caring. I was fortunate to get to
hug Michelle Obama this past Monday when she visited Tucson. One of the best qualities of human beings is our ability to honestly and innocently show our love for one another
    as fellow members of mankind.
I am sorry for the youth of Tennessee. Educating them about the consequences of
teen pregnancy and providing necessary information about prevention seems a
    better way to achieve success.

You can prevent teen pregnancy, but you can't necessarily prevent teen sex. Yes, with someone you're attracted to, "innocent" hand holding, touching, snuggling, etc. is the precursor to getting it on. That's just nature. All you can do is let your kids understand what you expect of their behavior and give them the facts. My mom said finish high school and don't get pregnant. I listened to her. I had sex for the first time at 18. I think that's a good age to start, you're legally grown, hopefully have a HS diploma and can get a job and marry to support a kid.

Making out in the middle of a school hallway is one thing, but hugging and cuddling? It's just affection, nowhere even close to sex. And if the teen pregnancy rate is so high in tennessee, then what are they teaching the kids in their Health class or sex ed class? How many people here remember those powerpoint presentations full of the nasty, disgusting, hideous truth about all the consequences of sex, unprotected sex, multiple partners, etc? And if all the facts and information didn't put us right off the idea, then the photos certainly would. As much as I hated those presentations, they were very effective.

Watch the bill get passed and the teen pregnancy rate will climb higher...so stupid. Maybe if parents would be the main teacher in their kids lives and talk to their kids about sex, maybe...JUST MAYBE...their teens wouldn't get pregnant.
