Is Gay The New Black ? ( Pride and Prejudice)?

True~Male November 25, 2008 01:00:52

In the wake of California's passage of Proposition 8, protests are popping up around the country---and so are comparisons between Gays' and African-Americans'. Is gay the new black?

    No

While gay people struggle for equal rights, the comparison is hyperbole. Our struggles can not equal the struggles of African-Americans to obtain freedom from slavery and then move to equality.

Granted there are comparisons when we look at hate crimes and the denial of marriage rights, but they are comparable not equal.

If there is any thing that can and should be recognized is that if it weren't for the struggles of African-Americans before us, we would have no model to follow.

BUT -- it is not we who choose to be gay. It is society that CHOOSES to discriminate against us.

A lot of people have been discriminated against. Christians, Indians, Negro and others . It is not a nice world but we have to live in it. God is love, but he has wraft also. Life here is just a vapor but eternity is a long time.

Many others have made some great comments here to make this clearer to understand.

People of color (not just people of African descent) have a characteristic that displays all the time. One cannot hide his skin color -- nor should he/she have to. They face discrimination from racist and prejudice people simply by walking into a store.

The United States segregated "colored" people after generations of allowing slavery.

Homosexuals in their fight for equal rights face different challenges.

Being black is not an activity.

Engaging in sex with people of the same sex is an activity.

This is a trick of political propaganda by those who support same sex marriage because they want to invoke the moral high ground of the civil rights movement.

Need proof that gay is NOT the new black?

Ask black people who voted overwhelmingly in favor of Prop 8.

Art, why do you have to turn this into 'engaging in sex'? Is that all there has ever been in your relationships? No, of course not. When I think of heterosexuals, i do not think about them having sex. Why do you?

It's crazy. Do as I say, don't do as I do, blah, blah, blah. The only war these folks have EVER won was with the Indians, (personally, nothing I would be proud of.) They came here and stole EVERYTHING the Indians had, (as we all know, stealing was the very least of their sins) yet claim that 'our country was founded on christianity'. The Indians welcomed them to this land and taught them how to live off of it. The ahem, christians literally would not have survived had it not been for the KINDNESS and COMPASSION of the Indians who were here first. Nice thanks huh?
Don't worry Free. They win a battle here, they win a battle there; we will win the war. It's just incredibly sad and extremely unfortunate that they never have and likely never will learn from their mistakes. Hmmm, I wonder how God perceives all of this? I don't think he's pleased. You? Peace out Free. You are a good man.

God does wants us to enjoy life however he made Adam and Eve, not Adam and Steve. There was a time when Gay ment having fun. So I guess that is why Gays are called funny or queer. Forgive me for my bluntness. Gay acts are like stealing, lying, etc. It is a sin of the flesh. We have a choice to live as God wants us to, or live the way we want to live. But one day we all will have a price to pay for our sins. You probably do not believe this. But that is what the word of God says. It is either to believe that or believe nothing. So I am believeing. The choice is yours. I do not condemn you as I do not have that right.

It seems like we just have to have someone or some people to feel superior to, when it actually is not the case! Why can't all God's children treat each other right? We are all in this big world together, we need to get a long! I personally do not care if you are gay, straight, bi, yellow, black, brown, spotted or white, as long as you do me now harm, you are okay with me!!

Hard to put into words... Gays and Lesbians enjoy many rights and privileges that Blacks didn't have, and you never see Gays being forced to sit at the back of the bus. BUT Gays and Lesbians do not have equal rights in many other ways. Your husband or wife is sick? Get a sick day! Same-sex partner is on their deathbed? Tough. Want to add your partner to your insurance policy? Don't make me laugh. *grin*

Black culture is much different than gay lifestyles. Most gay communites are very well kept and these people don't feel the need to commit crime because they go to work. Gays have different issues.

I totally agree, matter a fact I really get tired of homosexuals saying that they're like Blacks and/or women. The only similarities I see is if they're actually a Black woman who happens to be homosexual. I mean oranges and apples are both fruits but they're not the same.

I think there is a difference between being a different race than being of a different sexual orientation. I'm not trying to diminish the plight of the gay American but I don't equate it with race. I think sexuality is a private thing and doesn't need to be advertised. I have personal beliefs because of personal experiences.

Of course you do because it is you. I can't even begin to explain how I feel about homosexuality because my ex-husband told me he was gay after we were married with a daughter. I have watched him for the past 26 years since then. While I understand that he has no choice in who he is I can question his actions. I don't want to lump all gay men together because I know there are differences but I believe it is more than just a sexual preference.
