FGM (Female Genital Mutilation) is called female circumcision by those doing it, but is in no way analogous to male circumcision. There are two procedures for FGM. First, excision, in which the clitoris and the labia minor are cut away. This is analogous to cutting off the whole penis in the male. Second, infundibulation, in which the labia majora are sewn together to prevent anything entering the vagina. Hard to imagine in the male, but it would be like forcing the penis back into the abdomen and then sewing the skin together to prevent it coming back out. A small opening is left for urination and menstruation, but heavy menstrual flow can lead to blockage, infection and death. On the wedding night, the groom cuts the labia majora apart and holds the sheet the wife bleeds on out the window for the neighbors and family to see she really was a virgin.
Excision is practiced thoughout the Sahel and Sahara (the Sahel is the grasslands between the Sahara desert to the north and the rainforest to the south) from Somalia and Ethiopia in the East to Senegal, Mauritania and Guinea in the west. CLICK HERE FOR MAPS.

Infundibulation is practiced mainly by Arabic speakers, both in Arabia and Africa. The women of the Nile valley (Egypt and Sudan) frequently must endure both.

Excision was started by Jews of Ethiopia, maybe even before they crossed from Yemen into Africa with the Sheban conquest of Ethiopia and Eritrea. It is still practiced by the Falasha Jews of Ethiopia (now mostly living in Israel). It spread from them to the Coptic Christians of the Horn of Africa (Ethiopia, Eritrea, Somalia and Djibouti) and the Nile valley (Sudan and Egypt) With the Muslim conquest of most of this area, it was adopted by the Muslims and spread clear across Africa. Today it is mostly practiced by Muslims, many people think it is required by Islam. NOTE: Excision is never performed on babies like male circumcision because they would frequently bleed to death, nor is it performed on adolescent girls big enough to defend themselves. It is done without anesthetic, when the girl is (usually) eight to ten years old, adults hold the little girl down while one person (Usually an old woman) scrapes away the genitalia with a broken piece of glass or a razor blade.

Please do not make this a religious issue. It is practiced by African traditional religions, Coptic Christians, Muslims and Falasha (Ethiopian) Jews. The highest percentages are reached in some African traditional religions where it is part of a girl's initiation into womanhood. And it is most demanded by the girl's mother and grandmothers, they want it because they believe it is necessary to prevent the girl becoming promiscuous, a prostitute. See Bilal's answer above:
"This is not a Muslim practice. FGM has been outlawed for all Sunni Muslims (the vast majority of those practicing this barbaric custom) since 2006.
    http://www.iheu.org/node/2503
It is true that most of those doing this cruel thing are Muslim, but it is done by Christians, Jews and followers of traditional African religions as well.
We Muslims need to help stop this inhumane practice among our people."

I am sure you are right, but it is still a common practice among radical muslims. I still stand by that statement. I did not say all muslims, so you do not need to take offense. As for the so called Christians and Jews, the only place that could happen is in the 3rd world countries, and comes from ignorance. Yes, mothers and grand mothers actually do this deed, but this is what they are taught. In a society that is ruled by men, with women as less than second class citizens, it is not suprising. It is used as another form of control.

I don't think male counterpart procedure is appropriate either. If I had a boy, I wouldnt do it. I will say its a little offensive as a girl to see guys compare the pain of both. It's not even close.

I believe in right and wrong. No moral relativism here.
FGM is not to be viewed as religious freedom.

How could mutilation ever be ok? This proceedure is not done in a hospital or doctors office. It's usually done in a tent by an old woman with a dirty razor blade, piece of broken glass, or sharp rock.

That is a bit off topic there, Piwan. The question specifically is asking about Female Genital Mutilation, not piercings or tattoos.....Piercing and tattoos are 99% something the person does to themselves, or has done to them on purpose, while the subject of this question is forced upon females, young females, by others.

...except that female circumcision, done properly, includes the removal of the clitoris, while male circumcision, done properly, removes only a small piece of skin...

...except that male circumcision is done primarily for health reasons, while female circumcision is done specifically for control purposes

equating the two is like equating cutting fingernails to cutting off fingertips.
