Is Egypt's Hosni Mubarak a Good Friend? Dick Cheney Says Yes

Everyone else might want to flee from Hosni Mubarak, the Egyptian president who is battling against the voices of reform, but former Vice President Dick Cheney believes the U.S. should be careful of alienating, and so quickly, a "good friend."

Cheney, who was speaking at a celebration for Ronald Reagan's 100th birthday, told a group of young Conservatives, without criticizing President Barack Obama, that the administration needs to keep the channels of communication open and private with Mubarak.

"So he’s been a good man and a good friend and ally of the United States, and we need to remember that," said Cheney, according to Politico. "You’re looking for balance here, but I do hope that there is a channel of communication.”

Mubarak has resisted, so far, the demands by thousands of protesters to resign. The Egyptian strongman, who has held power for 30 years by using intimidation techniques, including torture and random arrests, has said he can't leave the presidency until there is an orderly transition.

An election is set for September. An early resignation by Mubarak would force an election within 60 days. Opponents fear that the longer he stays in office, the longer he will have to consolidate his power.

Friend to who? If Cheney says "yes" then he is not a friend of humanity. The Dick kiss of death.

if Dickhead Cheney says anyone or anything is good, believe the opposite! after he and old pal Bush raped America for 8 yrs you should think twice before listening to anything this old geezer has to say, and by the way, a "high 5" for the people of Egypt for "taking a stand" and organizing their revolution to bring change to their country and people, unlike Americans who just took it in the rear from Bush and Cheney

As Egypt has always had tyrants running it for over 3500 years, why should anyone be surprosed that Mubarak was known as the Pharoah to his own people. Every one rants about democracy, but it too over 100 years in our own colonial history for folks to get used to running democratic governance and eventually they decided to go on their own with George III. The point is that getting democracy started anywhere in the MidEast outside of Israel is going to take a long time!

What is more scary for the USA is getting a muzzy hardliner in office of Egypt. Say one backed by Iran or the Mussy Brotherhood.

I'm sure Cheney sees Mubarek as a "good Friend" as this viper only sees friends as meaning, "Willing to do whatever to keep my corporate profits high."

Possibly Cheney and Mubarek could share a jail-cell together, wonder how good of friends they'd be then?

I guess they'd have to settle on the question as to whether barbecued kittens equals pork or not wouldn't they, so that they both could imbibe on their favorite dinner snack? (Excluding fresh human newborns, but they get a bit pricey).

Sure he's been a good friend to us. He has a peace treaty with Israel and gives the US military ships first priorty through the Suez canal. And he has helped us with terrorists. On the other hand he is a dictator and has keep most of his people poor. Cheney makes a point but the man must go. Besides he's said to be dying anyway.

Gosh dang it.. I wasn’t aware that Cheney was in office for the past 30 years.

I guess those liberal administrations before (and after) Bush and Cheney’s administration had nothing to do with what Mubarak is.
