Gold is about $1700 an ounce and Silver is about $49 an ounce.
I have some Silver and now I have bought Copper. With the
way things are going in our Country we may not be able to
use our paper money that is already almost worthless.

Copper has been on a trend lately towards becoming a
precious metal. My only regret is that I didn't but some
Gold before it started rising in value so much.

Are any of you investing in precious metals? Do you
think our paper money will cease to exist?

Try platinum.... It used to be considerably more expensive than gold... and the relative values have now been pretty much reversed... It must be due to self correct soon!

Copper is also costly and usage is more and better conductor of the heat, electricity.

Copper as a mineral specimen is worth more than refined, but as a rule, no, copper won't be the next valuable metal, there is simply too much of it.

It is already going up in price. At one time you could
buy Gold really cheap & now it is very high. I have
already doubled the price on some of the Silver I
    bought.

Sure, but those are more rare metals. There is plenty of copper, if the price goes up they will mine more of it and then it will drop and stabilize. Is it worth holding for 20-30 years? You could invest in a stock and likely make more money ;-)

I realize I'm taking this in a different direction but, in many localities people are going into homes & stealing the copper water pipes. They're not just doing it in vacant buildings either. People are coming home from work to find their copper water pipes have been stolen.

Yup, it's already happened in ways that many find inconceivable.

That's pathetic but thieves will take anything. Recycling yards will pay a good price for copper, it happens here too but they are stealing air conditioning units.

Yeah, they have copper coils. 4 were taken from a church in Waco in the midst of the hottest summer on record. People are putting in welded cages over them that are attached to cement foundations. I hate thieves, grrr.

I feel the same way. Being an asthmatic having an a/c in the summertime is medically necessary. It's a shame people have to go to such lengths to protect their units.

The beauty of metals is that they can actually be used for something. It takes over a $1,000,000,000 to get into Forbes 400 now; which makes money just a way for the rich to keep score and of less and less value to everyone else.

It already is. The value isn't as great but it's the easiest thing to steal. Two air conditioners were destroyed by copper thieves from the roof of The Animal Welfare League in Chicago several weeks ago. We contributed so much that the equipment is replaced plus many other things the facility needed has been purchased.

Currently the sell-offs to meet margin calls and paper selling of gold and silver has made the spot decline. I also bought some copper mainly because I like the look, bars and rounds. It's not an investment metal unless you are a nation and buy it in thousands of tons for secular infrastructure development. Then you get it for much less than spot and get the added value via development. I don't think it will happen but if Cu becomes the next Ag whatever happened to make Cu so valuable would offset it's value.

I have all of my retirement funds in silver and gold. Other than some agricultural commdities, there is no other safe place to have it. The stock market looks good right now but is just another bubble that is going to eventually burst. Metals have proven their value as a store of wealth, and when the government destroys the dollar (and they will) the paper they force us to use as money will have only it's intrinsic value, which is zero.

The physical metals are held in a vault by the company who facilitates my IRA. Since they are held as part of that IRA, I'm not allowed to actually have them in my possession until I retire. But the metals are there, not just a certificate that says they are.

Copper has always been used as a low-end currency (that's why we use it for pennies). It's worth is pretty low, otherwise people would just collect and melt down said pennies!

Is My Penny a Copper, or a Zinc Cent?

If your Lincoln Memorial penny has a date before 1982, it is made of 95% copper. If the date is 1983 or later, it is made of 97.5% zinc and plated with a thin copper coating.

I traded most of my gold for Silver. The return rate is much higher right now. Copper is not a worthwhile investment. In 5 years the price has only fluctuated around 3.5 and 4. The other metals to look at are Rhodium ($2,050 per oz) and Palladium ($833 per oz).

up in value the past few years & this year has gone up more rapidly.

So what i did was buy a book about things you can eat that is all around us off ebay . You can trade a bar of gold for a loaf of bread today but what are you going to eat tomorrow ?

Many, many years ago I started saving short pieces of 2 x 4, and all kinds of other scrap wood for the day the United States went on the wood standard. (Have quite a collection now.) And just a few years ago, I expanded my pack-rat hoarding to include short pieces of copper tubing, fittings, and other assorted copper; sheeting, gutters, etc. I’m ready!

They tell me copper is going for $3.50 per lb at the local scrap dealers, but I’m holding out!

I remember $.85/gallon gas. I also remember when you could get a meal at McDonald's for less than $3.00. So much for the dollar holding it's value.

I hope that wood and copper hoarding works out for you. :)
