According to statistics, the army currently has the highest rate of suicide among soldiers ever, with 116 U.S. soldiers dying of suspected suicide this year alone. So, the U.S. Army wants to change its reputation... with a nasal spray.

The U.S. Army has given a grant to a scientist who will develop a nasal spray specifically intended to rid suicidal thoughts. According to Mashable, the spray would "deliver an extra dose of thyrotropin-releasing hormone (TRH)," which is a drug that causes a "euphoric, calming, antidepressant effect." Do you think the anti-suicide spray is ethical?

MASHABLE.COM reports:

It would be better spent working out WHY soldiers have these thoughts and preventing it that way...

    Like pulling out.

This is not as good as finding the root cause of these thoughts -- but it's better than nothing. I just hope the product does not lead to addiction and drug abuse.

I believe that suicide should be legalized. I think people should be alowed to choose if they want to kill themselves or not.

The problem with that is that soldiers are government property. They knew what they were getting into when they joined.

Reallllly? They KNEW what they were getting into? Soldiers are government "property"? And here I was, years ago, in the Army, and I was stupid enough to think I was my own person, that I SERVED the nation to which I was born. It never occurred to me that government OWNED me, that I was property, that I didn't own myself.

They aren't called GI Joes for nothing. Don't talk to me like I'm an idiot, with all your sarcasm. My husband IS Army, and there is all kinds of rules, guidelines etc. Where you can and can't get tattoos, mandatory dental, no walking and smoking while in uniform. Just ate

Exactly! But then government couldn't have that little thrill of denying a person's last wish. GOVERNment is about CONTROL, nothing more, and our federal government has stepped on and squashed so many of our freedoms that in my book, it doesn't even qualify as "the leaders of our country".

If your only concern is "health", then you are part of the major problem this country is suffering from. The FIRST thing that should come to every American's mind is the ethics, THEN the health. When ethics are dead, no one's life is worth living.

What would be more ethical is to divulge WHY there is a rise rather than shoot up chemicals into their system. Antidepressants always have a hitch anyway. They're loaded with side-effects, and can change one's personality altogether when in use - which is NOT a good thing, in most cases.

Instead of drugging people, stop sending out soldiers to fight in unnecessary wars.

Sounds good, but not a very helpful comment. Soldiers are soldiers because what they choose to do is soldier, not be a farmer, not be a groceryman, not be an accountant, etc. The reason taxpayers are willing to pay soldiers is because the soldier's JOB is to protect us and our Constitution.

Why do we have wars? More than one reason, I can assure you. The opposing side will almost always call the war "unnecessary", while the side in power will consider it necessary. Not all wars are fought for good causes, but most probably are. It's just that not everyone agrees on what is a good reason, and I don't see that changing until we are totally staffed and protected by robots. In the meantime, we should be protecting our soldiers from government experiments, from the "need" for suicide, from greedy government officials.

Not a helpful comment? You have the right to decide that? That's very interesting. There are such things as necessary wars. Those are the ones we should be fighting, but none are upon us right now.

It's not the best solution. The best solution would be to figure out WHY soldiers are committing suicide and address the cause. That being said, an anti-depressant nasal spray is better than nothing.

OMG... I cannot believe ANYONE would approve this... Why can't we realize that these VERY expense wars are destroying people, physically, mentally and emotionally...
We will spend BILLION$ over MANY years helping those who have been damaged which is the right thing to do....
BUT!!!! Drugs are NOT the answer in here... Stop the wars... and help those with emotional problems in healthy, caring humane ways......

These are the people running our world. These are the crazy leaders who spend all the money to run it like this. 2 party system > one and the same. We're brain washed to think it's any different. Do we need 4 more years of madness or will critical mass wake up and vote different? vote different

No... we now have a president who thinks.. and learns all sides... before he acts... And isn't there because he wanted to fill a political dream... He's there because he wants to make a difference. he said it all after the 2010 elections: "We were in such a hurry to get things done that we couldn't change HOW things got done." (ie: people's heads... new methods... etc.).

I don't think a spray is going to make them forget about the time they there, about the horror they've been through. You can't just erase that.

people with depression or suicidal thoughts need real help, support, and if necessary- therapeutic treatment. medication may surpress thoughts for a while but will only serve to worsen the problem if it is used as a supplement for professional help.

What's wrong with treating depression? It's got to be treated like any other condition.

But it still doesn't get to the root of the matter, which is why the soldiers are in such a mental state anyway. War takes a nasty toll both on combatants and on civilians. And a trigger-happy foreign policy causes untold damage to human lives. It's time we backed away from the military solution to international disputes. There are no winners in war.

damage human lives backed military solution international disputes winners war

treating depression is fine but a nasal spray drug is NOT the answer... It's only a quick fix to numb and postpone the real problems.

How about we just get these soldiers the mental health help they need without the risk of losing their rank and rate! This is just supressing the problem and will ultimately end the same way once they are off it. Looks like another thing to just get addicted to.
