I am not australian but, i must admit i do like the rule you have re: immigration. if you are not self sufficient you can go somewhere else. we in America are attracting the worst of the worst in terms of newcomers. if you are productive you are welcome to come in my opinion but, if you come for frebies, wont learn english[my italian ancesters had to, my scots/English ancesters obviously did not have to] and bash/Hate America, go back t o the third world cat box from which you came.

That doesn't make sense to me, sorry. Why would you go to [x] in an effort to get away from [x]?

I'm not sure we are that far gone yet, but we seem to be heading there if we don't do something NOW! We really need to pull back, focus at home and get our house in order before we try to help anyone else out. Stop foreign aid and spend it at home or not at all. Roll back entitlements and make them more accountable. Return the lock box to Social Security as well as revamping the program so it can survive for our children. Perhaps one generation without benefits is doable so our parents and children don't have to go without? Eliminate most of the federal government departments and put that money to paying down the debt. Remove regulations that stifle businesses and unleash them to create jobs, good and economic stability. One of my favorite all-time quotes is "I never said it would be easy, only that it would be worth it."

Welcome to the place were lieing politicians can be free to screw the American citizen, were you have free speech if you down what is good, and except everything that is evil, the so called lies of those who want to entangle you with more government and strap you down with a nation excepting socialisim, communisium, marxisim and the government with every regulation (168,000) of them, more taxes, more regulators, instead of having the love of GOD rule, and I know this ideal but instead of rules and regulations, people thinking of others without the government agencies telling you what to do and when to do it! No, you will not have a perfect world!
America has forgotten its roots, yes this nation has many dark pasts but it is also a good country, the Framers and Founders gave to us responsibility and we gave it to the lieing politicians who just go for the benefits, salaries and say the hell with the Constitution!
When Benjamin Franklin stepped out on the porch of Independence Hall a woman come up to him and asked, "What kind of government did you give us?" Franklin replied," A REPUBLIC if you can keep it!"

Unfortunately, my only realistic alternative is voting for the incumbent. I don't agree with everything he's done, nor with all the planks of the Democratic party, but right now I consider them to be the lesser evil.

Religion is man made so corrupt ; however America was built on a Christian foundation. Their are a lot of nut jobs out there but the majority - like me carry on quietly and try to live our lives as close as possible to the guidelines set out in the bible. The Ten Commandments. They are a great guideline fo life. Thats the problem when you remove the Nations Foundation the Nation its self will crumble and it is. No morale values in the Rule of law - disaster! Anyway I also believe at some time you will be judged as to how you live your life.
    My way of thinking.

"Religion is man made so corrupt ; however America was built on a Christian foundation."

No, it was not. It was built on a secular foundation. That's the fundamental error in right wing thinking. This country may be predominantly Christian in the religious beliefs of its people, but it is ALWAYS... FOREVER... a mistake to try to force secular law to adopt Christian principles. There is a separation of church and state for a reason. One of the many things our Founding Fathers got right was to vehemently stress the secular nature of the nation.

"No morale values in the Rule of law - disaster! "

AMerican law is based on English common law, not the bible. It has never been based on the bible.

The underlying argument that without religious dogma there can be no morality is flawed, as well. Morality is entirely dependent upon the set of social mores that any society adopts. In other words, what is moral to you may be immoral to someone who does not share your beliefs. Neither of you are wrong. In fact, as long as your beliefs are shared by the majority of your society, you are probably both right. There is no such thing as universal, or objective, morality.

"American law is based on English common law, not the bible. It has never been based on the bible."

British Common law was based on Christanity- how could it not have been. The Laws were not drafted actually using the bible, but by men who read the bible and their faith influenced the outcome of the laws they drafted..

"but it is ALWAYS... FOREVER... a mistake to try to force secular law to adopt Christian principles. There is a separation of church and state for a reason. One of the many things our Founding Fathers got right was to vehemently stress the secular nature of the nation."

Anyway, you will be happy to know that "Case Law" is fast taking over "Common Law"

Thanks for the back and forth - it's great!
  • Heptarch Hawk 2012/09/03 19:49:31
    Heptarch
British Common Law was based on legal precedent, not Christian morality. You could, conceivably, argue that legal precedent was based on Christianity, but then reductionism kicks in and you are forced to ask where Christianity got its moral code from. And if you're an honest historian at all, you must then concede that it was obtained through even OLDER religious and secular sources that pre-dated the bible by a very long way.

The point is that our nation was founded to be secular, as expressly stated by the Founding Fathers. You cannot, in good conscience, claim otherwise.

I know where it came from- you just disagree lol no problem. More and more people are not following any moral code. It is all too evident. We can follow any religion we want to in this country and that is what's great about America. You stick to the Dems - I would't vote for them if a gun was pointed at my head.

"I know where it came from"

If your answer isn't "even older sources", you're lying to yourself. Or being intellectually dishonest. One of the two. The entire Old Testament, including the foundations of Judaic law, are "borrowed" from even older religions and documents with new flavor attached.

"You stick to the Dems - I would't vote for them if a gun was pointed at my head."

I will for this election. Maybe next election the Republicans will be a little more worth voting for.

Listen - I don't know if what you say is true. I'm not an academic I've worked for 45 years with my hands, in all types of weather and all over the globe. I have seen and experienced much. I would never portray myself as something I'm not - like a scholar. I do however know what works and what does not work. In an intellectual battle with you on this subject I have little experience. This subject is interesting to me - but I have little time to persue it as you have. Perhaps I will some day. But for now my belief in God and Country will suffice.

I don't lie to myself or anyone else. One of my redeeming Christian values.

Look, I respect and appreciate your candor and willingness to acknowledge that you're not an expert here. Neither am I. More like an enthusiastic amateur. hehehe

But the truth remains the same: The Old Testament of the Christian bible, the rock upon which your conceptions of universal, objective morality reside, is pretty much a blatant plagiarization of earlier works.

There's nothing wrong with that from a literary standpoint, but once you start deifying the words in it, that's when I have to stand up and say "Ok, now wait a minute..."

In any case, that's only a tangent to the real point, which is that the Founding Fathers did not base this country on Christianity.

Illegals to me is because passed Presidents neglected to do a thing to stop it, but did encourage it, as you know at a pregnant woman cross the border and delivered here, they both were able to stay because of stupidity! They have more "RIGHTS" then the American Citizens have. America land of freedom for illegals, free medical, free schooling, freedom from paying taxes, maybe we should all become illegals so that we can all get freedom from paying out to be free!
TO ME we are the sick birds for letting it get out of control!
