Is America a republic or a democracy?

	A democracy of course, and one of the first.
	A republic, obviously, because elected representatives enact the laws, and are not constrained by the will of the masses.
	Neither, because it has become a combination of the two and has lost sight of its founding principles.
	It doesn't matter what America is in reality, but what it must be by law, by its Constitution and its founding principles: Subject to God and Divine/universal Biblical Law.

America was designed as a Republic, the Constitution and Bill of Rights support that fact.
But not too long after the War of 1812, there were already those who began eyeballing other states, and the jealous, greedy attitudes of collectivism, began ignoring what the Revolution was all about.
Eventually, that grew into one state thinking they had the right to dictate how another state operated - under what laws, Lincoln decided to start a war, trample the Constitution, state's rights, and it all went downhill from there.

It's suppose to be a Constitutional Republic, it is not that now. Whether or not we can get back to being that is another story.

I would rather have picked Republic, since that's what we were given; but it would have felt immoral, for me at least, because of how much our Constitution has been trampled on. God save our Republic.

Hard to answer - big business and the rich really decide the course of the country aided by the supreme court to call corporations individuals - at least with obama, the voice of the majority middle class can be heard!

People don't want to hear it but I think violence is the only way. We must fight for our freedom just like they did. The government will never willingly give up their power and rule over the people.

According to the US Constitution of 1787, the US is a republic but today with our “living constitution”, only Obama knows what kind of government we have.

They are constrained by the will of the masses as they can be voted out.....in theory.

A republic needs an educated and moral people to work. The numbers of such people are in an extreme minority anymore but I digress.....
