Is a Video Game Fueling the London Riots?

Well, that didn’t last long.

Video games have had a pretty good run of positive press, lately. Then came the London riots. Now, let the gaming controversy begin.

London has seen major civil unrest following the fatal police shooting of a resident late last week. Rioting, vandalism, arson and looting continue to plague the city.

It’s been suggested that the poor economy and a high unemployment rate fueled some of the anger, but the London Evening Standard has another take: the rioters were simply acting out what they’d seen in the game Grand Theft Auto.

GTA, a popular, long-running series that lets the player take on the role of a criminal, often features adult content and violence.

From the original article:

"Children aged between 10 and 14, said to have been inspired by video game Grand Theft Auto, were seen rampaging through Enfield and Brixton as riots and looting also spread to Dalston and Fulham."

The paper quotes a police officer and a local resident, both of whom told reporters they thought GTA contributed to the mayhem.

However, as the gaming site Computer and Video Games notes, “the Grand Theft Auto series has never featured any form of interactive looting or rioting."

People always blame t.v and video games for violence it their stupid parentsthat don't teach that violence is not the way to solve problems.I've played Mortal Kombat plenty of times and but I don't go around beating people up

I live in London, and Video Games had nothing to do with the riots, it was something that blew out of proportion and the youths of London saw an opportunity to loot stores and damage hard working citizens livelihoods with the amount of damage caused it will take ages to repair and replace the loss of things damaged

Puhleeze. Yet another excuse for bad behavior. They're responsible for their own actions. One of the participants noted that when they had a quiet, peaceful demonstration, no one noticed. Well they noticed this time.

I heard that one drug dealer was killed in London and that started mass-spread rioting over the country. Maybe the dealer was in a drug ring of many contacts..

Point and blame...anger understood... violence and rioting wrong!! Take personal responsibility for your actions. The only thing I can see GTA being responsible for...it might have been the game they looted!!

I see how whenever violence and destruction is around they always blame the video games. I play GTA and I don't go running through the streets setting things on fire and shooting people up. It's most definatly a deeper problem...

I really don't think that a video game could cause that much destructiveness. There are far deeper social problems going on here.

My boyfriend actually *took out some of his frustrations* with the riots ON GTA. So what do you reckon? XP

I read that the Monday edition of the Daily Fkn Fail 'blamed' GTA, and lambasted the BBC and liberal MPs.
(Before you ask, it was my mum's copy: I never buy it myself).

Gee... a newspaper looking to increase ratings by tabloid journalism? Never heard of that before.

Yeah let's blame people's actions on some THING, rather than make people take responsibility for their own actions.

I've played GTA tons and I've never gone out and thought "You know, I should totally just go rob this place..."

We are seeing the result of decades of a failed socialist system and unrestrained immigration - not game playing. Look at the other European Union member countries; they too, are toppling into chaos, one after another due to the failure of socialism.
America is on the brink as well. Only a momentous change in our own political system, back to Constitutional basics, can save us from a similar fate.

Don't get your panties in a twist. You are not seeing a "failure of socialism" in Europe or the US -- you are seeing a failure of Capitalism.

Otherwise, why do we have LESS THAN 60% of eligible workers employed, when corporate and extremely wealthy people are enjoying the best profit in many, many years -- often record profits. They should be producing jobs if Capitalism was working -- it isn't

    Regards,

    Reyn

    Rey,
Yes and no. Capitalism, if kept honest, (which it isn't at present), can, and has provided the surplus monies needed to fund many worthy social programs in the past.
Unfortunately, capitalism is presently driven by unrestrained greed, and the government is complicit due to corruption. Legislation, approved of by both political parties, has been bought and paid for allowing most of our present global dilemma.

Where Socialism has failed is that government has created a 'nanny state' mentality, where people expect everything to be provided for them by the government.
The explosion of social programs has become so costly, and the number of beneicaries increased so rapidly, that there aren't enough tax dollars or people with jobs to carry the load anymore.
BTW, maybe I like my panties in a twist...........Regards right back at you! FPS

Blaming the London riots on a video game is just an excuse to cover up the REAL causes of mischief and mayhem in the streets. "It’s been suggested that the poor economy and a high unemployment rate fueled some of the anger." Duh... Ya THINK? The incident of the police killing a civilian was really just the straw that broke the camel's back, the flame that incited the riots. The underlying cause of the unrest is England's crapulous economy and jobless numbers, and the country was a tinderbox just waiting to be ignited by a single, isolated spark.

As for "Grand Theft Auto" being the cause of the rioting, that's just ludicrous. I don't think folks need to be taught how to loot and riot. Of course, GTA is a video game in which killing police, pedestrians and hookers means points! Seriously, my son grew up playing games like GTA and listening to heavy metal music, and he hasn't gone off the deep end yet.

This is always what happens... It's like with the porn hysteria bs. There is violence, violent thoughts, etc. thus there are violent video games. In the case of porn, there are sexual thoughts, urges, etc. thus there is pornography. Violent video games don't cause violence; they exist because there already is violence in the world. Gotta love the PC-cops trying to ruin anything a little bit fun... People need to lighten up, detach themselves from a situation, and look at it critically and clearly.

People love to blame video games on theirs or other people's foolish behavior because it's so much easier than having to actually take responsibility for their own actions. I've played grand theft auto and I admit, I wanted to run people over after, but this difference is I never really did. Grow up people.

People need to stop blaming the distractions they give to children so they don't need to deal with them on political and social unrest. If you have kids and don't pay attention to them, then reward them with a video game to avoid dealing with their demands, chances are they'll be spoiled and useless.

Now it is certainly possible that kids are rioting and looting IN PART because they have become desensitized to violence by playing too many violent games, but there are other factors as well. And to blame it on a specific game is libelous i would think

I agree!!! With discipline being removed from school's over there, these kids don't know how to behave correctly. These are greedy punks!!! I like a quote I heard recently that applies to this: "How do you make a baby cry? You give it something, then take it away." This country received too many entitlement programs over it's socialistic history, and then ran out of other people's money to pay for it.

    Wow! another good observation.
Socialism is a wolf dressed in sheeps clothing because it appeals to our concern for the welfare of others, but it depends on the resources of still others.
There has to come a point when we stop 'giving' the fish, and teach the needy 'how to fish'.
