Print newspapers are having a hard time staying afloat, what with the rise of the so-called Internet. But there's one thing the Internet still can't get a hold of -- your nose. The Grimsby Telegraph in Lincolnshire, England infused its Friday edition with the scent of bread. That's right, scratch-and-sniff newspapers. Take that, Internet!
Printing press manager Carl Lawrence told the Metro, "The scent's contained in small capsules which are added to the yellow ink and as the pages move through the press, the plates crush the capsules and the scent is released. As the ink dries it locks in the scent, which is why you have to scratch it to release the smell." The paper's deputy editor is calling it "biggest technological breakthrough for newspapers since colour was introduced." Do you want to get a sniff of the Grimsby, or is it just too weird?

Larry Flynt wouldn’t have missed that bet. He splayed “First Time Ever Scratch’N’Sniff Centerfold” in gigantic letters across the August, 1977 issue of Hustler. The cover image was a female hand with pubic hair peeking between the fingers. A Surgeon General type white box read:
Warning: To be smelled in the privacy of your home.
Not to be smelled by minors.
WOW Ed you still smell like yesterdays news paper
And, having been in the offset printing industry, myself,
I find it rather refreshing, especially compared to the usual smells of print ~
I do have to wonder, though, about the chemicals and eco-friendly / safety issues thereof...
But, LOL... I can 'see the headlines'... "Newspapers sued for creating obesity... "
God knows, the smell of fresh bread A.L.W.A.Y.S makes ME hungry ;0 )
Know what I mean ?!? LOL... I bet ya do... ~jus'sayin', an'Peace !
