It’s been two years since NASA’s space shuttle program came to an end, but thousands of Americans still dream of becoming astronauts. Eight of them – four men and four women – were introduced Monday as NASA’s astronaut candidate class for 2013.

More than 6,300 people applied to become astronauts-in-training, NASA Administrator Charles Bolden said in a video announcement. That is the second-most applications the space agency has ever received, according to a NASA statement.

Not if we should keep electing demon-creeps aka democrats aka marxist progressives. If it happens it may be joint Russian-Chinese project.

I think it could be done, but the technological challenges exceed those of going to the Moon, and would take a similarly dedicated effort to achieve in twenty years. The United States of America does not seem willing to commit itself to anything, much less science and technological advancement, and so if it does happen, it will be the ESA or China doing it.

I sure hope so. But considering the budget cuts, I doubt it will be NASA to do it though... =(

Tell the politicians to stop giving money to the people that hate us no matter what we do and put the savings into NASA.

I have, and will again I am sure, but it takes more than just me. We also have to elect the right people, unfortunately the 'right people' don't usually run.

Yeah, if the Russians or Chinese do it. We certainly don't have the money anymore. A decade or so of living beyond our means will do that to the budget.

There is already a Mars colony planned by a private group of Dutch people. Anyone can sign up to be part of the colonists. Forgot the name of it.

It's going to be the greatest swindle of venture capital in modern history! Those Dutch investors are going to steal all the financing they get and blow it all in Amsterdam.

It has been 4 decades since the last lunar landing. How are we going to Mars if we can't put an astronaut into low earth orbit without hitching a ride from the Russians?

Manned space flight is risky and expensive. Robots are cheaper, safer, and can fly beyond human endurance limits. We send drones to save human pilots in Afghanistan. Why not do the same thing in space?

We can always revisit the issue when we figure out how to build a spaceship that travels at the speed of light. Until then, it makes no sense to send humans to planets we do not want to inhabit.

I think a crewed mission will take longer to put together. Probably more robotic missions though.

With our crumbling planetary infrastructure, no way. We haven't designed any space travel vehicles since the Shuttle. We can't afford to clothe, feed or provide medical care or education for people. How the hell can we afford to send someone to Mars?

Space travel is not NASA's current mission focus.
Hopefully that will change in the future.

One must ask, for what purpose? to look for life that might have existed, forget mars it's not worth the journey. it's the broken down guetto of our planetary system. No life, weak gravity, to hot, dusty, and barren. Now if you want to find life go to Ttitan, Uropia or Galemede . Or get real creative and grab onto an asteroid or comet.

I agree to a point but think we must crawl before walking or running. Mars would be good for that.

Ttitan, Uropia or Galemede are all missions that will take multiple years to complete with. Mars has a real chance to sustain a c colony. I hope we will visit those listed but for sure we will eventually run out of room here.

Never worry Lee the powers that be will always prune the population to a manageable size. a colony on mars is unrealistic the low gravity wont allow a sustainable atmosphere.

LOL I find your first point difficult to argue with.
I dont think though that terraforming/creating an atmosphere is a viable plan.

Financial ruin of American is this regime's goal.
There will be no trips to outer space while an evil regime is stealing every resource from the People. They have royal meta-trips and bullet-proof, flying underwear to waste our money on.
    Look at Africa.
    They have TONS of resources.
But their evil dictatorships will not allow the people to achieve success.
    Yes, I say EVIL often.
    It applies.
