I favor teaching students about civics, but the idea of using public funds to indoctrinate students should scare everyone -- Right, Left and Center. Each school will force its political views on the eager and willing students, as did this Chicago public school:
On Wednesday of Social Justice Week, Black Star Project, a Chicago-based community organizing group, was brought into the school after school hours to teach students about "non-violent" protesting.

Black Star Project, according to its website, is funded by Open Society Foundations (i.e. George Soros), Best Buy, ING and Toyota Motor Sales, among others.

I cringe at the thought of a Chicago public school allowing radicals organizations to brainwash our youth and turn them into zombie activists. The teachers knowingly exploited the childen's innocence and plans to use them as props in its radical agenda.Jones College Prep, a Chicago Public Schools “selective enrollment” school, held “Social Justice Week” in March, a collection of events geared towards turning students into activists. School administrators, through Social Justice Week, gave a platform to community organizers who in turn provided students biased information and encouraged them to take specific steps to protest.

community organizers turn students biased information encouraged specific steps protest

Teach about GOVERNMENT, NOT HOW TO DESTROY AND "DISENFRANISH" PEOPLE....WE NEED SOME COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT THAT IMPROVES IT....NOT JUST COMPLAINTS AND BIGGER GOVERNMENT...........INDIVIDU... MEANS BEING LEFT ALONE.......LET BIASED INFORMATION BE BANNED .........NOBODY NEEDS "MOB RULE"

another reason I don't support anything the teacher's unions support. they do not have our children's best interest in mind, no matter what they tell you. It's all about entitlements and money.

I kinda thought it was the same thing. Got no problem teaching kids about non-violent protest. Beats the hell out of violent gang based protesting. Ever hear of The Women's Suffrage movement. That turned out OK. And Mahatma Ghadi was pretty successful in affecting huge positive change in his country through the use of non-violent protest.

But since this won't happen -- government run schools will always indoctrinate children in the "government is the answer to everything" meme, and refuse to teach them about their power and duties as individuals and citizens -- i prefer removing children from public schools and either homeschooling them or allowing them to pursue their own education via unschooling.

There are sooooooooo many they waste time on and soooooooooo many things they should be teaching. Community organizing is NOT one of them. For Christ's sake, I have a daughter that graduated, got great grades and doesn't know how to keep a budget or balance her friggin' check book!

No No NO - Public schools should be shut down and each family should be given the same amount that is wasted per child in our current system - to be used for private schools of their choice. Enough of this - our school system has failed our teachers have failed. Let's get back to the fundamentals basics of education. Teach them how to read and write and thing for themselves. Give them a healthy dose of Competitiveness and allow them to attend the best schools based on ability nothing else.

Fef, you need another choice or two. I never took civics (more's the pity); I think part of civics should be readiness to stand up for what you believe in. It's not enough anymore to just have opinions. If everyone got in the streets to peacefully settle our differences, politics would have to change.

What's the problem here? The discussion was optional. They were having a dialog on gun crime. This article is just more whining from the right. People who want indoctrination of right wing biblical curriculum to be standard fare are the only ones upset by this.

That's not true, I wouldn't want indoctrination of either right wing or left wing ideas to be done by schools whether public or private. Schools should be teaching children the basics in math, reading and writing, actual history (as opposed to the revised and altered histories that have been part and parcel of schooling since the early 1900s), how to use their brains, critical thinking skills, the Constitution and its purpose, and about their power and duties as individuals and citizens of the unique form of government our Constitution created (and which the lack of vigilence by American citizens for the past 100 years has allowed said government to be altered in ways both very dangerous to our standing in the world and destructive of our liberty and freedom).

Then you are an exception to the general rule. I agree, though-- extreme ideology should not determine a school curriculum. But let's be realistic and admit that every school indoctrinates kids into our current political ideology through the process of socialization by reward and punishment.

Schools should stick to the academic subjects. The public school test scores are already very low--and why? Because the special interests demand that all sorts of other things be included in the name of 'inclusiveness'. That includes my home state, where we have to include 'sexual orientation' in history. No wonder many parents don't want their children in the public schools.

Community Organization that Obama is involved and in that he wants to teach in the schools, is as the O.C.C.U.P.Y. group that is acting like pigs everywhere they go to camp out and DISRUPT whomever they are Protesting against. They are PIGS. THey have NO respect for people or their property. THAT is what Obama wants taught in our schools.

We should teach Civics and focus on the history and isms of this nation. Community organizing is a component of our ability to bring about change within our civic community. Be honest, most if not all community organizers are Lobbyists.

How to get together and teach Reading. Math science like their supposed to. Our schools can't do it. Maybe if the parents would organize for something worthwhile our kids [including mine] would learn something to take to the job market upon graduation.
