In this election year, we have an incumbent that has only served one term. Given the history of the presidency, that is the party they are affiliated with, and those presidents that have sought a second term, who'll will win?

This is basically a numbers questions. Clearly I expect some manics to go on diatribes about why this one is better than that one...fine. But, as I mentioned it's a numbers questions and numbers don't lie. Unlike our politcos. For those that are racing touts, this is a no-brainer. You go with the odds.

Hmmm. Sorry it was confusing, but I did mention presidency and president in the originally question. It definitely is not scientific. But, there were 18 Republican presidents and 15 Democrat presidents.

still offers nothing for us to decide who will win based on any stats.

Originally, I was wondering what others believed without the statisics. However, there were 9 presidents who ran for a second term, but did not get elected. One of the presidents was a Federalist, another was a Democratic-Republican, two were Democrats and five were Republicans. One of those Democrats was Grover Cleveland. I think you could say he was re-elected, but I chose to include him as Benjamin Harrison (one of the non re-elected presidents) separated his two terms. The Republican presidents served a total of 88 years (that's an average of 4.89 years per president). The Democrat presidents served a total of 85 years (average 5.67 years per president).

But it is true, I think, that we have more two term Republican presidents than Democrats. Statistically...the Republicans should have an advantage...but their current crop are not outstanding. And the GOP have come down on the wrong side of the issues for most of America. We are a nation that has fundamentally changed since the 1960's.

If the Republicans can loose their Tea Party image, they can eventually get back in the White House.

I ran the numbers and just using those presidents that have wanted to run for re-election (not assassinated or "bowed out" - LBJ) and won were mostly Democrats. In fact, only one Democrat did not get re-elected, Jimmy Carter. All else have, with the possible exception of Grover Cleveland. His was not consecutive. Five Republican incumbents did not make the second cut.
