In many states a rapist has parental rights. Should a woman be forced to carry her rapist's baby to term?

When asked about abortion and rape, Republican Todd Akin said:
"Well you know, people always want to try to make that as one of those things, well how do you, how do you slice this particularly tough sort of ethical question. First of all, from what I understand from doctors, that’s really rare. If it’s a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down. But let’s assume that maybe that didn’t work or something. I think there should be some punishment, but the punishment ought to be on the rapist and not attacking the child."
Doctors say this is absolute hogwash. Women who are raped can, and often do, get pregnant.
And, in many states, a rapist has parental rights and the victim could be tied to her rapist for eighteen years, shuffling her child to and from his residence. This is true even in the case of incest!

gumybare69 2012/08/24 17:57:31No, a rape victim should not be forced to carry to term.+7People can be against abortion if they want, but Rape isn't a choice for a woman that is Raped! I'm not a woman and I couldn't even imagine the thought of having to carry a baby to term that was caused by being Raped, every time she looks down at her belly she is constantly reminded of the fact that some POS man took advantage of her and there is nothing she can do about it because someone she doesn't even know decided that her baby is a good thing and shouldn't be aborted. Interfering with a woman's right over her own body in this case is just sicking to me!

How many babies have you had from being raped??
In 1972, 39 women died from complications of illegal abortion and 24 women died from legal abortions. Since 1980 that number has dropped because of medical technology. In 2007, 6 women died from legal abortions. How many babies have died from abortion, millions!
So, you remember nothing like what you're implying. In 2000, 68 people died by falling into their own bathtubs. We didn't outlaw bathtubs.
A statistic perhaps more typical of the pre-Roe era was reported in a 1969 Scientific American article cowritten by Christopher Tietze, a senior fellow with the Population Council: "The National Center for Health Statistics listed 235 deaths from abortion in 1965. Total mortality from illegal abortions was undoubtedly larger than that figure, but in all likelihood it was under 1,000."
Self-induced and back-alley abortions were becoming a thing of the past long before Roe: sex researcher Alfred Kinsey estimated in the 1950s that around 85 percent of illegal abortions were performed by physicians, even if the physicians weren't all in good standing. The fact is that prior to legalization abortion had become relatively safe and easy to obtain — for those who could afford it. Studies done at the time show that the risks were borne disproportionately by those who couldn't, mostly minorities. Were abortion to be recriminalized, that would likely be the case again.

So, in other words, if abortion was recriminalized, poor women would die.
