Did You Know An Estimated 16 Million of the US Citizens Living In Poverty Are Children?

Definitions

The federal poverty guidelines are issued annually by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. The demographic findings on this page were calculated using a more complex version of the federal poverty measure—the thresholds issued by the U.S. Census Bureau. For more information about federal poverty measures, see The 2010 HHS Poverty Guidelines.

Child
A child is defined as an individual under the age of 18. Children living independently, living with a spouse, living in group quarters, and children ages 14 and under living with only unrelated adults are excluded from these data.
Low Income
Families and children are defined as low-income if the family income is less than twice the federal poverty threshold (see Poor).
Parent
Among children who do not live with at least one parent, parental characteristics are those of the householder and/or the householder's spouse.
Poor
Families and children are defined as poor if family income is below the federal poverty threshold. The federal poverty level for a family of four with two children was $22,350 in 2011, $22,050 in 2010, and $22,050 in 2009.

Yes and if we could get at least half their parents off their bottoms those children would have a better chance at life.

I'm sure Mitt's idea of fixing his poverty is a sweat shop of children working like some of the Western Chinese sweatshops for Nike or Apple.

All you anal probes couldn't tell the difference between a liberal and a moderate, let alone any other political belief. Sorry I'm not Liberal and I'm not Conservative. Your beliefs and their beliefs will be the death of our great nation. Sad you don't know a political joke when you see one. What ever way we choose to run a nation it's not the way Obama is doing it and it's not the way Mitt desires it. Trickle effect of Reaganomics is flawed. Taxation with out representation is flawed as well. I could explain a cure for this head cold but! You and many others would rather listen to your own words.

Playing MMORPGs points out that an economy strictly based on a climbing wealth system destroys economic fairness and lack significant trickle effect. People will give money to support causes anyways. Perhaps my logic makes no sense to you but... Ever consider where all this money comes from? Banks actually create their own sense of inflation. The more you let it inflate the less your dollar value becomes. In other words the rich are only making themselves poorer. The poor well they are only left to be more hungry. You notice those high interest rates back long ago on savings accounts. That's because there was higher taxation. Anyways... You bore me! Try to actually research instead of argue.

There really was not a problem with jobs back then? You actually have the balls to make that idiotic statement!

Seems you have no clue about the second worst president in history Jimmy Carter. Tens of millions of jobs were lost because of that buffoon along with our strength as a nation.

Fix the wealth issue? So you are one of those lazy bastards who expect a handout instead of making sacrifices to better yourself. Get off your lazy ass and earn your way.
  • Terranc... marcuss... 2012/09/14 22:36:06

Jimmy Carter wasn't responsible for the jobs. It was Richard Nixon, Gerald Ford attempted to fix it and it got worse. Jimmy Carter tried a whole new approach but it failed too. Jobs don't disappear immediately under a political leader they happen over time. They grow over time. A boom of jobs will only create a larger significant low of jobs to follow it.

Then why were 18 million jobs created under Reagan? Seems you need to use that Google thingy and see the Carter economic destruction. Wow you are clueless.

You're clueless. You need to look at both sides before considering one side better than the other. There was a job plummet effect that was going to occur that would have been more significant than the boost of jobs. Whether he acted or didn't. I'm not saying he made it better, he definitely didn't do the best he could.

If I might possibly have diverted you from exploiting this topic for political purposes towards more constructive solutions I believe I may have helped in a somewhat small way. There are organizations where you can contribute your time and effort on behalf of disadvantaged children if you currently lack sufficient income as many do in these strained times. I mentioned Kiwanis earlier.

Nothing shocks me any more. Despite living in a 'civilised' society, poverty exists worse than it ever did, that's because the gap between rich and poor is getting wider each year on year. The old soup kitchens have been replaced with food points, even the working folk can't afford the basics and need help. Succesive governments have turned a blind eye, they are in denial of this problem, and they don't know how to deal with it !!

You do realize we have been giving money to the same people in the Middle East since the 1960's right? You do know that we give money and weapons to those same regimes before the 1960's and almost "Zero" goes to the majority of honorable people who live in those said countries like Saudi Arabia, Iran, Iraq, and so on. It's not a blame Obama thing, but change the system overall.

Lol Wingnut? Maybe you lack comprehension skills, so I will repeat. Not voting for Obama doesn't mean anything because our government is set up to always give money to the "So Called" enemies. The people within those countries aren't the enemies or the problem; to end the cycle you must change your way of thinking and actually commit to changing our foreign approach fully instead of spouting nonsense on SH.

I knew.... But not to this extent. THANK YOU for doing this discussion. Great Job!
It is so sad, and the kids are our future.

I did not care for Bush as much as others, However, He did have a Program called No Child Left behind. When was the last time you heard about that from Obama/

Not talking Politics, just bringing up a point. We need to address these problems in our own Communities. I know one church that when they saw a House needed painting and the people who owned it, did not have money to paint it. They got permission from this family to paint it.
The family was very happy about that and we can all do something in our community to help.
Every winter, I carry old clothes in the back of my car and I offer Jackets to the homeless, Yes I know that some may not really need it but that is between them and God. But I do try to help those in need.

Point is. Make a difference in the life of someone you don't know and don't expect anything in return. Jesus said if you do it for the least of these, you have done it for me.
