When under 75 years of communistic rule, millions of Russians did. Despite ridicule, harassment, confiscation of religious property. Atheism was the accepted teaching. Religious beliefs will never perish.

You don't have to watch the video, i think hearing it is good enough.

Looks like you are one of those believers that "silos" there brain to accept science where you need to but filter it out when it interferes with your belief. I would have to say most Americans fall into this type.

No .. not at all .. (I'd say that is a wrong perspective about me personally .. )
    Again . FAITH .. hope .. belief ..
that is a personal matter .. one that I am (obviously)
more willing to listen to and respect with the curiosity of the sci/tech within ..
it is often that when one reaches out .. learns about the faith of others .. that you find the COMMONALITY between family life .. across the cultures .. across the faiths ..
(each year .. I take some time to go do a little bit of exploration .. in combination with my personal research (going into the stacks) .. I tend to also explore one more aspect of human life .. the faiths of those who are willing to invite me into their lives for a bit of time to teach and share their personal thoughts, values .. goals .. beliefs ..

I am so sorry for your family. I find that when watching the Discovery or History channel they find an awful lot of things that support the bible. Sounds like you have an abundance of faith that have served you well. Kudos on what you've accomplished.

    Sure!
Millions of children who believe anything adults tell them, as we speak, are being indoctrinated into a possibly life long mindset to believe in imaginary beings.

If children were denied religious indoctrination until age 18, religious myth would wither away in . . . . about 50 years.

They have believed since before there were civilized peoples. Even the native Americans believed in "The Great Spirit" before Spanish and English people came to the US. Looking at writing on the (cave) walls you can tell that ancient civilizations believed.

You can't teach atheism. It has no doctrine to teach.

Also, they are mostly Eastern Orthodox, which is an almost nonexistent denomination in America. You realize you christians have over 38,000 denominations? That doesn't include the many christians I meet that are basically a denomination of one.
  • MkB sodabox 2012/07/07 20:42:31

Sure you can be taught atheism.

Assume someone grew up not being taught any religious beliefs.
His/her knowledge was strictly secular. Science, geology, astronomy, etc.

Then one day that person was asked "Is there a God?"

Without any evidence for or against, the logical answer would be, "I don't know".
(since no one has disproven the existence of God)
That person would be considered an agnostic (not an atheist).

The only reason they would state "there is no god" is if they were taught that.
Atheism is a belief system. A belief that there is no God or a disbelief in his existence.

No, that would be like teaching someone not to be a stamp collector. No one does that. Atheists teach their kids to be open minded.

    Stamp collecting isn't a belief.
Atheism is. Since there is no evidence against the existence of God, it can't be considered a fact, or a truth, or a principle or a policy, or a doctrine, or a dogma.

Beliefs don't necessarily have to be religious (beliefs).

    be·lief

    2. confidence in the truth or existence of something not immediately susceptible to rigorous proof: a statement unworthy of belief.

    a·the·ism
    noun
    1. the doctrine or belief that there is no God.
    2. disbelief in the existence of a supreme being or beings.

There are different types of atheism. I should have explained that from the beginning, sorry. You are an atheist about Hindu gods. I am talking about atheists about the christian god. I am not talking about absolute atheism which is the belief that there are no gods at all. Thus, I don't have to disprove the christian god any more then you have to disprove the Hindu ones. There are very few absolute atheists, even Richard Dawkins is not one.

The point he made was that even under oppression and a regime against religion, they couldn't keep people from believing and continuing their religious beliefs.

Oh, well they didn't really try. When Russia was nearly beaten by the Nazis, Stalin turned to the church to inspire the troops. They had big parades with crosses and icons to raise people's spirits. So, it was only a very short period that Stalin was anti-religion. Once he understood how to use it to control people, Russia has had a state religion: Eastern Orthodox Catholic. I don't see this a some great test of religion's survival. I think people just don't know the facts.

Oh sure. There will always be those that choose to deny God and make themselves a god. To be self sustaining and be in total control is just smoke and mirrors.
But, for those that truly see, they will know God and their lives will be better.
