You have a valid point when you don't support some of those conservatives who believe their way or no way the first comment is you are a liberal. Do they realize there are those who are moderate or conservative on some issues or liberal on others ?

Each issue should be judged independent of the party line. Some of my views run toward the conservative side and others are decidedly liberal. There are good and bad agendas on both sides of the fence. Independent thinking is critical for moving our country in the right direction.

I love this assumption when I venture into political threads, being called Liberal almost as a matter of course. It's funny because if the radical Conservatives knew I'm Communist, they'd have even more to rail at me about.

No worries... I'm about as conservative as they come, except for an embarrassing libertarian streak, which results in my being occassionally mistaken as a liberal. Heck, one time I was called a teabagger and a sociaist in the same thread! ;)

Extremism in the pursuit of liberty is no vice and moderation in the pursuit of liberty is no virtue.

You probably are a liberal or a troll, but there are many dimensions of political and economic thought (including religious) and each dimension has a spectrum ranging from one extreme to the opposite extreme. Sometimes people are conservative in one area but liberal in another. Hence we have moderates and libertarians and other classifications. And sometimes we run into semantic problems. The definition or beliefs of an 18th century liberal do not resemble modern day liberals. Heck, liberals from the 50's and 60's were quite different from liberals today. Then there are all the additional terms like progressives, neo-conservatives, etc. But in such a multidimensional world labels can end up being misleading or inaccurate. Then you have people like me who are quite conservative in my personal life, but more libertarian in my political beliefs.

Don't consume what the blogosphere and the media tries to feed you. Just because you know you're not conservative doesn't mean you're liberal. It just means you know you're not conservative. Most of the US (academically speaking) are somewhere between the conservative and liberal end-points. This is a country of moderates.

If you ask a modern American conservative, the answer is no -- you are either a conservative or you are a socialist atheist muslim.

But if you ask a sensible person, they will tell you that there are many positions on the political spectrum from right to center to left. If you ask a political scientist, they might even point out that the right/left spectrum we use is actually multi-dimensional, so you could easily be a conservative AND a liberal... on different issues.

of course not. moderation exists in all things - even politics.

that said, if you want not to be labeled "liberal" if you disagree with a conservative and "conservative" if you disagree with a liberal, you're on the wrong forum.
    just sayin.
