In case of an emergency, like a loss of conscience and in case of a shock, the patients should be brought directly to the hospital. In such cases, the diagnostic must be left to real professionals.
I'd try to help them I'm not that much of a bastard.
Seriously though, I have had a close family member have a breakdown and it can be very hard not only on the person but the family also. We got through it by giving that person as much support as we could and helping them get help in dealing with their feelings and problems. The one thing I will say to anyone in this situation is to be sure that the person having the breakdown understands that many things can cause it (in my family members case it was due to a chemical imbalances in their body). Once we got them on medicines to regulate all of the various things our body makes to keep things in check they started getting better and back to the person we knew and loved. Also be sure that the person wants help and is comfortable with the form of help being offered. There are many avenues of help to deal with these type problems and success can be dependent upon the "right type of help" being offered.
Not to chew on... but you know, to talk to.
