If you are brain dead and only kept alive by artificial means, does your soul leave your body at the point of brain death, or when they turn off the machinary and your body dies?

I'm puzzled with the case of Jose Pequeno, the soldier who lost half of his brain in an explosion at Iraq war. He is now in a similar condition of a 6 months-old baby, he can't talk, understand, or show normal facial expressions. He's unlikely self-conscious, or at best in a state of very fuzzy consciousness. The question is whether his soul (spirit) is still with him, completely left away like dead, or in-between.

If we really have a soul, thats a horrible thought. We would be jailed in an ineffiecient prison. I personally would not like to be stuck with no means of escape.

I believe it happens when your body is completely dead, that is when the spirit leaves, whether it be straight away or a little while after.

But , if your brain is dead and it cant tell your heart to beat, arent you really dead and maybe the machine is the only thing that has any real "energy"? I mean, a heart can be restarted after several hours (if harvested for a transplant for example) so if it still has life, is the donor still alive? Where is his soul? When did it leave his body?

If your brain is dead and your heart isn't beating you are dead. Life support really only keeps you breathing. I don't know of anything that keeps your heart beating. If you come in to the hospital and your heart isn't beating and they don't get it started you are dead and if they are going to use organs they better get them quickly because there is no blood pumping through your body and they will not be harvestable for too long. So I guess technically the body is kept alive and I think the soul is there until the heartbeat is gone.

not exactly sure.........God takes your soul when he wants to.....I have heard in some cases some people actually leave their bodies before a terrible death. Wouldn't that be a great blessing from the big guy upstairs?

isnt that in the bible somewhere.. thou shalt not taste death? Actually its my belief you never 'feel' death.. Iv died twice and wasnt scared either time.. that kind of led me to the conclusion that if your scared your probably not dying at all because the body is fighting to keep the soul gravitated to the form. And.. scientifically according to doctors when seriouse injury occurs you rarely feel it for a perioud of time after it happens anyways becasue the nervouse system relays the information so fast it almost cant be explained to the brain .. and the brain as a defense mechanism instantly coats the nerve receptors both to and from the areas with a heavy gel like substance that keeps any and all synapses from passing back and forth... which usually lasts atleast 30 minutes after the injury occurs..... at which point shock may kill you.

just like life entering the body,, its not an event but a process.... I believe in an instance like your talking about that you drift back and forth between worlds.. or atleast thats how Iv read it explained by those who have been comatose and pronounced brain dead , only to wake up.
