If the public overwhelmingly supports gay marriage as gay advocates claim, why has EVERY SINGLE gay marriage bill that has come up for a vote been smacked down by the voters?

I'm not sure I've ever seen a poll that says the public overwhelmingly supports gay marriage.

Because politicians rarely vote in the interests of their constituents? They are not so good at the "representative" part of representative government.

Or are you talking about a referendum type thing? When was the last one?

The "explanation" you're looking for is easy.

    1) Anti-Gay fanatics, such as the Mormon lobby, pump advertising dollars into the elections and sway the votes of the weak-minded.

    2) The Black vote, that helped elect Barack Obama, doesn't help the equal rights for LGBT bills because for some reason Black Pastors tend to be homophobic.

    Ironic story...

I'm white, and grew up in a Church with a Gospel Shouter.

It takes time and effort to build your own self-esteem enough to tell the Bible Thumpers to keep their opinions to themselves.

Today, I'm proud to say I can tell anybody to buzz off. But when I was a kid, I was scared to go against what the Preacher said.

The breaking point was when two girls I'd never seen before came into Church on a Sunday morning in 1979, and sat down.

They giggled a little, but they weren't bothering anybody. They were nicely dressed, even if their skirts only came to their knees. They were probably from Chicago, visiting family in town.

The Preacher came to the back of the Sanctuary and started shouting at them.

They were ashamed and terrified, and ran out crying.

    Why, you ask?

    They were Black.

And being from the big city, had had the temerity to dye their hair.

On white girls, you could guess, but you couldn't be sure.

    But...

But the Preacher wasn't going to allow any Black girls that had dyed hair in his Church.

It was right after that that the Black family right down the road from the church converted to Islam... hmm.

So you see, skin color has nothing to do with being a self-righteous, judgmental S.O.B.

Anybody can be prejudiced for any reason. All it takes is the inability to think for yourself, and the willingness to hate.

First off: Most polls show that the opinion on gay marriage is close to tied with a small percentage more in favor of gay marriage, this is hardly an overwhelming majority. Secondly, not everyone who votes in polls actually votes on these laws.
  • thefatguy 2012/07/19 17:43:12
The majority of people do no support gay marriage.
    thefatguy
It is true that the overwhelming majority of the public doesn't want to redefine marriage and this has been shown in every state in which a vote has been taken. But, I have never heard gay advocates say that the public overwhelmingly supports "gay marriage", as stated in the post. I have heard them say that the public is hateful and bigoted against gays. But, the gay advocates don't argue that "gay marriage" should be allowed because the public wants it; they argue it should be allowed because the majority is wrong. Ironically, this is from the same political side which always espouses the virtue of democracy and the wisdom of the people. I guess their support for democracy ends as soon as it works against them.
  • Jkirk3279 thefatguy 2012/07/20 04:21:28
    Jkirk3279
Actually, they're arguing it should be allowed because banning one class of people violates the "equal protection" clause.
  • thefatguy Jkirk3279 2012/07/20 04:40:08
    thefatguy
No one is banning anyone. Gays have the same exact right to marry as heterosexuals. The fact that they choose not to exercise that right is their choice. Therefore, there's no violation of the "equal protection" clause. It's quite simple really.

It didn't even work in very liberal California, the land of fruits and nuts. The majority of Americans don't want anything to do with it.

What the average person don't know is that the "GAY" population in this country is about 4%. That's it. But because most of them are in the MOVIE and information industries, they make more noise than anybody else. And crimes committed by and against the GAY population, is the same as crimes committed by and against the straight population is the same. But since GAYS have esconced themselves mostly in the information industries, they will make everyone imagine that GAYS are being oppressed by the straight population, and gays are being butchered right and left every day. They are too loud to ignore. So, my advise, just live your lives the best you know how, make as many friend you can with everybody

A majority of people don't support gay marriage. But 70% of Americans support SOME form of legal recognition for Gays such as Marriage or Civil Unions. Most people understand that Marriage is a privileged institution that carries spiritual denotations but that we cannot legitimately exclude the legal rights to Gays and ought give some form of legal recognition.

"Overwhelmingly??" Not in any poll I'VE ever seen. It was up to a whopping 53% in 2011 but it has started dropping and is now down to around 50%. Anyone who is using the term "overwhelmingly" is flat-out lying.

And we're talking about POLLS. People are often embarrassed to speak the truth on a poll because they are pressured 24/7 by the media that they shouldn't feel the way they do. The only thing that matters is what they decide when they pull that lever.

...unless some radical Federal judge overturns the decision of We the People. Then your vote doesn't matter AT ALL.

It's because the votes you are referencing were taken years ago, and public opinion has shifted significantly in the last several years. It appears that Maine's same sex marriage referendum scheduled for this autumn will result in a large majority of voters supporting same sex marriage. See the link below.

I'll give you one recent defeat, but next autumn you will have to give me a "smack down" in Maine of the homophobia which you seem to promote on Sodahead. The point of your posting was that ALL of the votes had gone against gay marriage. My counter-point is correct. Most of the votes which you were referencing were years ago, and public opinion on this issue has shifted significantly in the last several years.

first of all i truly believe that most the pro gay marriage properganda is just that propaganda. but here in maine one of the main reasons it was defeated. was all the people from out of state . or away as we like to put it. coming here with their elitist attitudes telling the people how backwards and unenlightened they would be if they did not pass it.

People ask you a politically correct and sensitive question.
