    We humans are great apes, and when given a vote, we generally have not directly selected for our own extinction--we just make a large number of bad decisions which may collectively bring it about.

    Then again, there are religious fanatics who apparently would think nothing of directly exterminating the entire species under circumstances that they believe would grant them entry into some sort of theoretical afterlife. That level of mal-adaptation is certainly far beyond any of the other great apes, so it remains to be seen which branch of the family tree will ultimately prevail.

    The solitary animals like gorillas are Republicans. The "group" animals, like chimps, are Democrats. The Democrats wouldn't vote to exterminate humans; the Republicans would.
