If religious leaders were unable by any means to take money or favors or services for what they did and were only able to get hugs and thanks,. Then how many true believers would remain in the USA ??

By this I mean if it were really really really impossible for them to receive goods or money or anything except kindness,. and no favors.

We'd mainly have deists and pagans left. Sounds almost too good to imagine :)

Most would still believe and most would still serve thier will always be people that take advantage of any opportunity for personal gain in any circumstance. We hear all the time of secular charities where they turn out to be false or only a very small part getting to the people they claim to help. But churches are the largest source of debt and disater relief in the world.

I would say most, but I don't know every religious leader in the US.
It annoys me that some people think it is silly to give to the church.
Not all pastors, preachers, etc. are scheisters.
My pastor does get his income from the church, but its the only thing supporting his family.
He lives a very modest life.
Most of the money the congregation gives goes to missionary support and support for the congregation itself if anybody is in financial trouble.
Our church has annual budget meetings where we determine where the money for the coming year will go.

Without a tithe (they usually expect 10%) they wouldn't live so high on the hog; the big churches that is. I hear some REQUIRE the tithe or you can't belong to their church. I never thought that was right.

Very tough question. Religious leaders do have to have a certain amount of money to live. Hugs and thanks will only go so far if you have a family to feed. I still believe that our religious leaders would arise from peope who would not have to devote their entire adult lives to religion. I attend a church where the pastor is a retired military man and takes no salary.

There is a sort of masochistic need in many Christians of my acquaintance to be seen to be suffering for their faith.

Majority of formal religions would go out of business, along with their religious leaders. They would turn to other forms of greed, and a very devote few would live as Jesus taught in humility and poverty.

In the teachings of Paul, man has to learn that whatever circumstance he finds himself in, he is all right. Therefore, those who were true followers of the word, would still stand as followers of the word. If they were untrue, who would miss them?

That is exactly how the Mormon Church is ran and we seem to be growing rather quickly. No one gets paid from the very top to the very bottom with very few exceptions. My Bishop is a Doc. and that is his sole income. The church has nothing to do with his income. The only exceptions are personal counselors such as psychs. We have no paid leaders.
So yes it is possible for some one to be a leader and not get paid. And yes we still pay our tithing.

The number true believers wouldn't change. The number of hypocrites might decrease a bit, though.

The number of true believers would probably remain the same, however there would be fewer so-called "religious leaders" and certainly fewer mega-churches, which seem to be springing up like mushrooms these days.

Take away just the tax breaks, and you would see much less.

Their support structure cannot survive on just the small donations they receive for their Sunday showtimes.

Most of them would probably stay. They still would have their stipend (salary)from the church as well as a beautiful old house to live in, heat and lights paid, driveway plowed in winter, a cook to prepare their meals, and of course their food is paid for by the church as well, a house cleaner who vacuums, cleans the bathrooms, changes their bed linens, etc. They would still make out better than the average person.

Religion is as big and corrupt as any fortune five corporation. One thing I learned watching the business office at a big Baptist Church was, "You don't mess with the Cash Flow" that is the quickest way to get yourself in trouble.
