Obama himself said the only reason a debt ceiling increase was needed was a failure in leadership. He has proven himself correct. His failure is why we already need a second increase in his short term as president.

It's been an understood thing at times through history that some of congress vote against the debt ceiling increase as a sort of statement, but never enough to default the nat'l debt. I'm quite confident and certain, however, that Obama would never have held the nation hostage over his vote. It was a token vote. Happens almost every time. It's a way to notate being displeased with the current president.

He is holding the nation hostage right now.

As far as I can tell, President Obama has been the adult in the room since this began. Public support is with him and against the Repub stand of insisting that taxes cannot be raised under any circumstance, because they signed some cockamamie pledge to Norquist. I'm not a raise taxes nut, but Bush put a major tax cut in place at the same time we entered a couple of wars and turned a balanced budget into a major deficit, and it's somehow all President Obama's fault now that he wants to put the taxes back where they were (I'd put them even higher to pay for the wars) in order to right the ship. He's already shown a willingness to make massive cuts in spending if some tax loopholes are closed.

Is that why he left the talks after telling Cantor not to call his bluff? As far as taxes goes it has been proven over and over again that raising taxes does not raise revenues.

I didn't realize President Obama made the same remark. Cool. I agree with him. He is coming from a position of strength, and has pretty overwhelming public support on this issue. The president has put a $4Trill debt reduction plan together that is 85% cuts, and 15% revenue increases. I think that's reasonable of him. Repubs have put together a $2.4 Trill reduction plan with no revenue increases. Less reasonable, I think.
