Ice Cream Prices May Go Up Due to Vanilla Shortage: Will You Still Be Buying?

Ice cream prices could be on the verge of a price hike, The London Daily Telegraph reports. The problem? Vanilla pod shortages. Apparently production is down worldwide, from India to Mexico, leading to grim predictions for the ice cream eaters of the world. Vanilla prices are already up from $25 per kilogram to nearly $40 a kilogram, but so far ice cream producers are taking the hit.

Nick Peksa, a Mintec market analyst, thinks it will affect ice cream across the board. He explained, "The stocks in the world are being run down, and we are getting to a point now where we are likely to see the price suddenly shoot upwards. It is the most expensive ingredient in ice cream production per kilogram, so it is highly likely that some producers will not be able to absorb the extra cost. It could push the price of ice cream up by around 10 per cent." Will the potential price hike keep you from buying ice cream this summer?

I don't buy ice cream very much, but when I do, it's always vanilla! Prices rising won't stop me from buying!

I buy ice cream so seldom the price is not a concern since it is a solution to an impulsive urge not a need.

I say No, but if the price does not go too much higher, a slight increase will not stop me from buying, but a steep price raise, then I'll find some other treat to tantalize my taste buds. There is always an alternative, try Yogurt. If it comes to either Ice Cream or Gas, then I'll have to choose Gas, and I'll cut out Ice Cream.

Upsurd. I was at Costco last weekend and actually bought some pure vanilla extract because we ran out. 12 oz bottle $8.00. I think I paid $5 or 6 bucks for the tiny bottle (3 oz?) of Schilling vanilla extract last year. In my estimation, the price has gone down. Costco had pallets and pallets of the stuff. Who knows, maybe they cornered the market.

No more than I used to anyway, which was rare! Is there also a shortage on artificial vanilla?

If I was not Vegan, I would not be influenced by the price because I always loved Vanilla and life is short (thank heavens), so why begrudge oneself?

Yes, I'll still be buying. Somehow I wouldn't put it past the conservatives to try and blame all this on Obama just like the gas prices over which he has no control.

You are wrong if you think that Obama has no control over the gas prices, and iis not to blame. Maybe not totally to blame, but he shares some of he blame, since gas prices have more than doubled on his watch. He could authorize the Keystone Pipeline, and open up more drilling areas that have proven reserves, and allow drilling in Taboo areas, and this alone would psychologicallyaffect the oil prices that the MidEast is charging us. There are other things that he could do, but he wants the prices to go up and reach what they are in Europe, that's his goal.
  • Heisenberg Bill 2012/04/07 06:35:48
    Heisenberg
The Keystone Pipeline was also going to be built along the Ogalalla Aquifer and risk contaminating the water supply there. Not to mention domestic oil production has already quadrupled under Obama. If gas prices in America matching that of Europe will be what it takes for us to make green energy and green cars, then so be it.

If ice cream goes up, the gas industry will think it is justified to raise gas prices more too, right?

I clicked yes although I rarely eat ice cream. I do however use vanilla in all kinds of desserts and baked goods. So while the price of vanilla is going up, I will continue to buy it as either beans or extract.
