I have to take a drug test to keep my job. Should the welfare recipients my tax dollars support be required to take a drug test in order to get welfare?

Hell yeah they should. But then again I don't think we should have welfare. Unemployment yes, but welfare no. Maybe then it would force people to get an education and get a good job.

Yes, they most certainly should. My place of employment can compel me to submit to a random drug test at any time. If decent, hard working peole are subject to drug tests, welfare recipients should be, too.

The cost to test people would be high.....
Random testing or requiring hair samples may
work to deter people form applying......
Tax dollars would still end up... in the hands... of humans
    in need.......
Hair testing can not be beat.....unless you wax your whole
body......or clean yourself out for 3 months......

Welfare, public housing, student financial aid, any form of government supported benefits should involve drug tests, at least once a months.

There's NO doubt that the Obama administration is the most socialist, irresponsible, and corrupt administration in our nation's history. There is NO way that he would ever make his voters (welfare recipients and the perpetually unemployed) conduct urinalysis testing. This would be twisted by the ACLU or NAACP as a "racist" thing and, therefore, never implemented.
Obama and his fellow socialist democrats in Congress consider welfare recipients as "victims" of something. So, having them perform ANY degree of responsibility for their condition would be considered "rude" or politically incorrect (by them, NOT Republicans).

Moot point, welfare is the drug, a human addition, a dependency upon the charity of others. The Government needs to get out of the welfare business. Just look what (governments) big hand in the social security (cookie jar) has done. The welfare system is corrupt through and through and should be abolished. I'm sure we can come up with a better system for helping those who truly deserve help and rid ourselves of thousands of third and forth generation of leaches at the same time. And yes, help those to become drug free............

Food stamps are money, and medicaid costs the tax payers money. If someone is on drugs, their medical bills will be higher and those of us that work will have to pay.

Welfare is their income. If you are on the public dole, you have the same responsibilities as one working a job. If the one working a job must be tested, so should welfare recipients. This includes corporate welfare.

Wouldn't removing their money only force them into crime to feed their habits though - would we not just be replacing one problem with another problem.
  • J Outtolunch 2009/02/23 22:06:58

It would force some, maybe many to quit. Those who had rather commit crimes - well, since we are paying for their upkeep anyway, we'll just do it in a more confined space.
  • Outtolunch J 2009/02/24 00:18:56
    Outtolunch
haha yeah thats a fair point - but I was thinking more of the victims of crime more than the criminal aspect of drug funding itself. As the sister of a recovering heroin addict I am only too well aware of how difficult it is to quit and how easy they turn to crime rather than make any attempt to go straight.

Then they shouldn't have anything to worry about. I am in the military and I have to submit to random urinalysis even though I am not a drug addict. It is just one of the regulations I have to accept to keep my job.

Just out of curiosity, I looked this question up online. There are differing opinions, some for and some against, but I copied one below, that best agrees with my opinion.
Let me see if I get this straight... the person who authored this email says he/she works, pays taxes and is drug tested randomly and has no problem with that. But he/she does have a problem with welfare recipients who are not required to be tested receiving public assistance.

SO, if people are receiving public assistance payed for by taxpayer money have to take a drug test, then shouldn't all employees who work for the city, county, state, and federal levels also be tested? I mean we wouldn't want to leave anyone out would we? My tax dollars also pay for them to have a job. Would it not also be interesting to see how much money could be saved for firing all public employees (yep even down to the guys who mow the grass for the Parks and Recreation department) that pop positive on drug testing? Bet it would be a fortune!

Not every person on public assistance is a drug dealer or on drugs or needs a "hand out". There are many elderly persons on fixed incomes that need help. What about single moms/dads, foster parents, and people that are just having a tough time? This mentality is disgusting and I hate getting ...

What really bothers me is the results from the poll. I wonder how many people really thought this scenario out before clicking the "yes" option? How quick some are to condemn those that need our help. For shame.

You make a very valid point, Jay. Just because granny collects SS doesn't mean she's blowing all on crack! Agreed.
The local Houston district just spent three million dollars to investigate high school steroid use. They discovered THREE suspected cases, which of course translates to a million dollars a perp.
Diminishing returns,,,,Sure, we could blow this way out of proportion and spend more in enforcement that it could ever be worth. But I think there IS a place for random checks, even if that eeevil word 'Targeting' has to raise its
    inevitably racist head.
"C'mon, grandma,,,, let's pee in the bottle for us now,,,," [ LOL ]
