Hurricane season is now underway. Have you made any preparations?

Don’t be surprised if this year’s list of Atlantic hurricane names sounds familiar. Except for three replacements, many of the same names blew through during 2007 in one of the most severe seasons ever when measured by property damage.

Noel, Felix and Dean have been retired after producing a combined total of nearly 350 storm-related deaths six years ago, mostly in the Caribbean. They were replaced by Fernand, Nestor and Dorian, joining 18 others on the list.

The World Meteorological Organization rotates six lists of hurricane names in succession, retiring and replacing the names of the deadliest and most destructive storms (called cyclones and typhoons in other parts of the world).

I'm leaving NYC to go to SUNY Buffalo in 2 weeks. If I get hit with a hurricane there, we have a whole other list of problems.

I live on the gulf coast. I don't freak, there is always time to decide what to do. If one of the storms start brewing and I get that 'feeling' in my gut that it's time to get ready, it will take me an hour to get all the necessary supplies and be ready to hunker down.

I'm as prepared as someone living in NM can be. Also prepared for wildfires since I'll get that before a hurricane. The only things I can't prepare for are earthquakes (it's probably been a while since one was felt around here), tornado (there is only one room that doesn't have an outside wall), if one of our many dormant volcanoes decides to erupt (bye-bye), or if Los Alamos explodes (probably the most likely after the wildfire).

I live in an area the is prone to tornadoes and hurricanes. After living through the aftermath of Katrina, you can bet we're a lot better prepared now than we were then.

I live inland and nowhere near a coastal area so I'm safe from true hurricane
damage. I have never witnessed the brunt of a hurricane in my area.

I live in a part of Maryland that doesn't see too much damage from hurricanes. They don't usually come this way and when they do the wort part goes east of us while at worst we get power outages and (in lower lying areas) some flooding.
