Hurricane Sandy Could Bring 'Catastrophe,' Affect 60 Million: Is the Storm Overhyped?

One hell of a storm. Just glad it didn't hit me.

The media does not tend to overstate the seriousness of the situation when it come to reporting disasters. And it is not over yet!!! I expect there to be even more problems with this storm and the aftermath of it. With Global Warming or Climate Change we will see more severe disasters in the near future.

It's a serious thing, and sometimes it's good because if it REALLY is that bad then you should warn everyone before so no one gets hurt.

Some areas have it really bad. Our only problem was the cable internet going out but I have my laptop upstairs receiving the neighbors DSL through wifi and sharing it over the network via router until comcast fixes the lines.

The storm was almost 1,000 miles long and even has a pretty nasty blizzard to it. It even did what hurricanes don't do which is to fuse with the cold air and keep going so I doubt anybody has had "5 Sandy's."

We had 5 Sandys, Katrinas, Ikes in Florida in ONE year, tore up the whole damn State; did anybody hear war drums for us in Washington??

Uh huh. When that happened New Yorkers rushed to give help to Florida instead of being like "oh well, you pansies can't handle our blizzards." Oh, and I could be wrong but I'm pretty sure Florida did get plenty of coverage and federal aid.

Simple point;we LEARN. The ONLY thing you can do is #1 prepare; #2. get the hell out of its way; #3. go back and clean up. Just like the left coast and their earthquakes. You LEARN and build things better. Why the blizzards thing?We live here so we don't have to handle your blizzards.

My point exactly. Hurricanes are normally a thing of the South and not the north so us getting hit by it is the equivelent of you guys getting slammed by a blizzard. I've seen how Floridians handle a dusting of snow; it's the end of the world!!!!

They had a dressed rehersal this time last year; there is such a thing as concrete telephone poles now that don't break; the 100 year old oak trees either need to go or trimmed back ALOT for hurricane season; you prepare !! It's not that important that you make a mistake, it's where you go from there; it's how you rebound that counts.

better to be over hyped than to be ignored like we had under GWB.

The storm was bad but the media over-hypes all natural disasters because of ratings.

The media mantra-

If it burns, it earns.
If it bleeds, it leads.

Some on the West Coast might think there is a bit of hype, but I somehow doubt those in the Northeast think so.

NO! Listen to the NOAA, and then get the hell out of Dodge as your told.

Prepare for the worst and you'll be ready for the rest as well.

Now that the storm itself is over many states are dealing with flood damage, fires, power outages, wind, downed trees, worst subway damage in history and initial estimates put cost in the billions.

So the people who complain about storms being over hyped may want to check with the families of the dead. I would rather prepare for the worst then sit at home laughing at those who do.

I don't think you can over hype natural disasters....just my opinion.

they ALWAYS over hype these storms and real storms manage to get no coverage until they hit.
we had NO howling winds,torrential downpours,juts rain ,light most of the time. but flooding will be a problem.

Especially compared to ACTUAL disasters, like the tsunamis in Indonesia and Japan.

I was overhyped for Delaware, but not for new jersey, and new york.

As someone that grew up dodging hurricanes in the south, it is always wise to take the warnings seriously. That said, a storm that impacts the very heart of the Broadcast News Business in NYC has got to generate some coverage...

Besides, the storm gives the MSM an excuse to ignore the possibility that Obama was in the WH situation room while they watched the Benghazi attack in real time. The MSM now can ignore the fact that Americans on the ground were begging Washington to send help. The SEAL that was "painting the attacking mortar location" with his lazar targeting device only does that when lazar guided ordinance is orbiting overhead. Yet permission to release the guided bombs or missiles never came. The enemy used the lazar as THEIR targeting to direct their mortar fire back onto the SEAL team member that was trying to save our Ambassador and he was killed.

So intended or not... the Perfect Storm... ends up being the Perfect Distraction.

The fabricated mushroom shaped cloud over NYC is a chilling analogy of the convenient distraction that it really is.

Of course it is... I've been through several hurricanes and can see that. The water is calm... that wouldn't happen if that was a real tropical storm.

It's obvious that people need to be aware of the dangers. Anything could happen now as a result of climate change. I hope that this will wake up the sceptics.
