Huckabee to Anti-Union Crowd: Deflate Car Tires and Mislead Voters

ProudProgressive 2011/10/17 20:05:00
As bad as it is to simply watch as Right Wing efforts at voter suppression reach unprecedented levels, it's still kind of a shock to hear a prominent conservative who makes no effort to hide it. Mike Huckabee, one time Presidential candidate, so-so guitarist and paid Rupert Murdoch Propagandist, did just that on Friday. Of course, the Right Wing Media will either ignore it completely or call it "just a joke", but Right Wing voter suppression and voter manipulation changed the outcome of the 2000 and 2004 Presidential elections, and any threat to our democracy must be taken seriously. Even from Mike Huckabee.

Huckabee to Anti-Union Crowd: Deflate Car Tires and Mislead Voters

—By Andy Kroll

| Mon Oct. 17, 2011

Former GOP presidential candidate Mike Huckabee has some advice for people who support the anti-union law passed in Ohio that faces a statewide repeal vote on November 8: Find out who's voting to repeal the bill and block them from ballot box. The onetime Arkansas governor suggested deflating tires and giving these voters the wrong election date. "That's up to you, how you creatively get the job done," Huckabee quipped.

Huckabee's remarks came during an appearance on Friday in Mason, Ohio, before a crowd of 350 people, according to MasonBuzz, a local blog that first reported the remarks. On November 8, Ohioans will vote on Issue 2, a much-contested ballot referendum on whether to repeal Gov. John Kasich's controversial anti-union legislation (known as SB 5) that curbed collective bargaining rights for his state's public-sector unions. Recent polls have shown that a majority of Ohioans support repealing Kasich's bill. Enter Huckabee. He has been stumping for voting yes on Issue 2—that is, to uphold Kasich's anti-union bill—urging members of the audience to do the same, and to pray in support of the measure. As part of his plea, Huckabee told the Mason crowd:

Don't vote alone. Vote with someone—family, friends, relatives, people you work with. Make a list. Make a list of ten family members, ten friends, ten neighbors, ten folks you work with or have worked with in the past and call them and ask them, 'Are you gonna vote on issue, and are you gonna vote for it?'

If they say no, well, you just make sure that they don't go vote. Let the air out of their tires on election day. Tell them the election has been moved to a different date."

Local media have suggested Huckabee's voter suppression suggestions were offered a joke.

Huckabee's advice came at the end of a bitter stretch in the SB 5 fight. Earlier in the week, a group backing the law was caught manipulating an ad supporting SB 5's repeal and remaking the spot to say the opposite. In the original ad, paid for by the union-allied We Are Ohio group, an elderly woman named Marlene Quinn credits firefighters with saving the life of her great-granddaughter, Zoey, during a house fire, and says that voting to repeal Kasich's anti-union bill will help firefighters do their job. But in the recut version, the pro-SB 5 group Building a Better Ohio (whose staff includes Kasich's former chief of staff) selectively edited the first ad's footage to make it appear as if Quinn supports SB 5. We Are Ohio and other repeal supporters immediately condemned the disingenuous ad, and at least 30 TV stations pulled it from the airwaves. Quinn called the recut ad "dishonest and downright deceitful" and said she felt "violated." However, Building a Better Ohio has stood behind the ad, and Gov. Kasich said "what they're doing is fine."

Melissa Fazekas, a spokeswoman for We Are Ohio, says Huckabee's comments were "really shocking" and a clear example that SB 5 supporters "are willing to go to extremes" to silence Ohioans who oppose SB 5. Given that the fight over SB 5 has been a front line in the national clash over union rights, what happens on November 8 will hardly be a joke.

I'm really puzzled about why some conservatives seem to feel that certain people shouldn't be allowed to vote.

Could a conservative explain that, please?

I seriously doubt most Conservatives in our modern age think like that. Can we stop talking in generalizations? Pretty please?

    Can't we all just...get along?

Of course, some of them think like that. They are working hard to suppress the voting rights of certain groups, they working hard to undermine the rights of workers and they're engaged in a war against women.

I don't have to prove anything except the fact that your comments about Conservative women stinks of sexism, and it speaks for it's self. [...] and says much about how you feel about women in general.

Damn, you missed the entire point of my post. I have a lot of respect for women, support equal pay for men and women who do the same job, and support women's rights. By choice, my doctor is a woman, my accountant is a woman and my attorney is a woman.

The point, since you missed it, is the choice conservative women make to inhabit a world dominated by a large number of misogynist men who would deny, for example, reproductive freedom to women and stating, essentially, that women can't be trusted to make choices related to their own bodies.

By the way, could you and other conservatives learn the difference between "your" and "you're?"

Do you know what the tragedy of Republican women is? It's that you have REAL, SMART, QUALIFIED women, who would make decent leaders. But they aren't pretty. I wouldn't vote for them, because I'm not a Conservative; but as Republican presidents go, I think Kay Baily Hutchinson would be a good one. Before she ran that deplorable campaign ad, I thought very highly of Elizabeth Dole. But they don't look like Sarah Palin or Megyn Kelly, or Michelle Bachman. Your side chooses flash over substance when you try to make yourselves look like you aren't total sexists. The irony is pathetic.

I don't care if they're men or women. What bothers me is using pretty, but unqualified, incompetent, stupid women; as proof that your party doesn't hate women. They aren't pundits or politicians. They're models. Pretty faces with nothing behind the eyes.

When it comes to women in politics men and women use their "looks and how they dress" to define them...............I still can't get over the fact that both parties were saying Hillary looked like a dude, because she wore pantsuits.......Hillary had ugly legs, etc. etc. it came mainly, from men, but women used the sexism too.

Fannie the oldest prejudice is misogyny, and men have for centuries decided what "type" of woman is acceptable. I agree with another poster that the conservative movement has qualified women who would make good leaders. Look at the way some conservatives attack, for example, Susan Collins or Olympia Snowe. You're also correct about the attacks against Hillary Clinton.

From a societal standpoint or, more correctly, from a mass media approach, what type of woman is promoted by media most often. Trust me, it's not women who look like Hillary. It's the supermodel type who is so damn skinny it's unhealthy I'll give you an example.

Alessandra Ambrosio is a Brazilian supermodel. Supposedly, she's around 5'10" but her weight is often listed as 119 pounds. Frankly, I don't think that's healthy, but that's the type of women promoted by media. Over time, I've learned that Victoria's real Secret is that only skinny-ass women like the one I mentioned can actually fit into that lingerie.

I was not a Hillary fan at all, during the primaries, but I think she's been, maybe THE best Secretary of State in my lifetime. I don't need my elected officials, or advisers to them; to be attractive. I'm not gonna ask Claire McCaskill to the prom. I just need them to be smart and to care about doing their job better than anyone else could. Whether she looks like Gabby Giffords, Nancy Pelosi, or Debbie Wasserman Schultz; I just need them to do their job.

You know, there are smart, good and decent Republicans who have my deep and abiding respect. They are the ones who discuss issues with the understanding that I'm not an idiot for thinking what I do, even though they DO think I'm wrong. And i don't think they're stupid, even though I do think they're wrong. You don't do that. Youjust judge people as being less than you, if they are not LIKE you.
