How silly, how idiotic can the federal government be?
In order to remain eligible for federal subsidies
for school lunches, officials at Davis High School in Salt Lake
City, Utah, knew they weren't allowed to have active vending
machines selling soda and candy in the school lunchroom during the
47-minute lunch period.
But rules designed to keep kids from washing down their lunches
with something fizzy can be tricky. That lesson was driven home
when the state Office of Education's Child Nutrition Program hit
the school with a $15,862 fine—75 cents per violation over the
period of many months that it turns out students had been illicitly
selling soda in the school store.
Fearing more fines, the school has pulled the plug on all of its
vending until it can figure out what the rules
require. Because students eat lunch in the hallways, vending
may actually be banned throughout the school.
A local ABC affiliate reports that the school is considering
extreme measures:
There are also plans at Davis High to put soda and candy vending
machines in a converted janitor’s closet, with a door, to comply
with federal guidelines.

Mistakes of their elders????????? The kids lose twice because of the nanny state of our federal government which should be shut down and defunded by the citizens of America.
These whackos who have taken it upon themselves to dictate everything about everybody everywhere belong in a mental hospital. Their obsession to dictate to everyone is NOT what I consider NORMAL.
Were I this school in Utah, I'd tell the federal government to STUFF IT, and refuse their money altogether. The money they send the schools is how they retain so much control over what is supposed to be a local responsibility. If I had to teach outdoors under a tree, that's what I would do.

TruBluTopaz 2012/05/19 15:34:09+6We have kids selling drugs in the halls and the FDA is worried about SODA? In one school I visited, students made a personal fortune buying six packs of soda and boxes of candy and selling them before school. Ironically even in the era of free lunches, many of the kids will dump all the government ordained "healthy" food, but fill up on junk they bring with them. What are we going to do-start patting kids down for Snickers bars?

They can be much more silly and assinine if they need to be.
I'm sick and tired of all these unelected groups of people that are part of the Unconstitutional government expansion into our lives and the lives of our children.
If the school thinks vending machines are an educational necessity, putting them in a lockable closet seems fine to me.
Yes, get the feds out of public schools. I don't have a problem with subsidized lunches -- at the local or state level.
We all lose at least twice because of our fed gov.
So "What IF" FedGov had never stolen the money in the first place? Gosh, we would not have had this "amusing" story to play with on SH!
Oh and before someone objects to using fast food. The school system merely puts nutricinal requirements in the contracts and I can guarantee you private enterprise will supply something the kids will not only buy but also eat.
