How many mass murders like the Colorado movie theater shooting occurred in the US before 1968?

RJ~PWCM~JLA 2012/07/20 15:20:22
Literally thousands! With guns so easy to obtain, there were mass murders just about every day!
Very, very few. In fact, I can't think of ONE that happened before 1968!

In the United States before 1968, guns could be purchased mail-order.

That's right. Anyone who "certified" that they were over 21 could purchase a gun via the mail. There were no "background checks", or waiting periods, or one-gun-a-month laws.

Guns were cheap and plentiful.

My God, the carnage must have been horrible!

So just how many mass murders like the Colorado movie theater shooting occurred in the US before 1968?

One I remember the Texas clock tower shooter that killed 14 wounded 32 after stabbing his mother and wife to death earlier in the day.

Kids were allowed to take their guns to school if they were going hunting after school. Much different society than we have now.

Murder, rape and robbery were lower then because they didn't know who was armed and even if they did something and got caught the law would punish them.

there have been plenty of movie theater shootings and mass shootings... however, middle america, suburban ignorites, and ritchie ritchs dont' hear about it because they occur in mexican, black or asian demographic areas. why is the aurora shooting any more important or deserve any more gun reform and public sympathy than those in the past? i don't give any more sympathy to this demographic because if they are the predominant examples of good morals and values then THEY should've known better and this shouldn't be publicized as sympathetic. if it were a black or hispanic or asian demographic the coverage tone would've been that of a glorfiance of gangster behavior and how they are examples of why they should be controlled.

U would need to look up the files in your local library, they have them saved in those old school data film strips that slide through and views threw the computer. I totally forgot the name of it but we used it in the 80's and 90's. It looks like an old school floppy disk, the real floppy disks not the late 90's small hard floppy, and its like a negative of a picture or cook strip. The internet is not going to have moat of the old shootings, Idk y??? I tried searching. I do recall shootings in urban black and Mexican area theaters after New Jack City and Boys in Ra Hood were released respectively. There were shootings in the theater and outside the theaters. I remember mocking those dumb wanna be gangsters fighting because of a movie. NOW I THINK THIS WHITE IDIOT IS STUPIDER THAN ANY OF THISE BLACKS AND MEXICAN GANGSTERS, because at least we know the motives of these gangsters... What was this little ritch white boy's motive: he was probably still mad at his mom and dad for taking away his car or computer or cell phone. I have no sympathy for these kinds of people, they are well off and live in a so called great community. I feel more sympathy for those suffering in the ghettos and sometimes have to be violent.

I've heard of other cases when people with legal guns were at the right place at the right time. I am going to be getting my permit soon and I am willing to help protect the innocent! I myself would have not hesitated in shooting the colorado shooter and I would have shot to kill.

BTW, if it ever comes to it, don't tell the police you shot to kill. Make sure you tell them that you only shot to "stop the person from harming me [us]."

My wife heard the guy from GOA on the radio a while ago - he said that the theater had a "no guns" sign out front. Not confirmed, but if true -

Gee, the "no guns" sign didn't stop this POS from doing what he did.

That's the problem. The states have laws, the cities, and then the individuals. It's too much trouble to carry a weapon any more.

Then the theatres need to take better precautions and start checking bags or having fulltime securities. This is going to hurt hollywood big time.

The criteria of this question is silly. We are not in the mid 60's anymore and the mindset of people is not the same. We don't have white-only drinking fountains anymore, is that because those times were better?

It seems that every time something like this happens, and it is happening more often, the conservatives circle the wagons and start screaming about the the progressive want to take their guns away. It never happens does it? Nope.

Instead of realizing the truth, that our gun laws are too weak to be effective, the conservatives start crying that we need more guns. It couldn't get more ridiculous.

Nice a bunch one liners from a web site that shows no studies, just opinion.

Like how the site says the criminals can get guns but "law abiding" citizens are restricted from getting guns. Could there be a dumber statement? Guns are easier to get than ever. If the citizens wanted guns they can buy one. They are NOT restricted from getting guns.

    http://www.huffingtonpost.com...

"In 2008, 31,593 Americans were killed by handguns. In addition, over 40,000 were injured in nonlethal gun attacks, leaving some victims crippled for life.

Compare these appalling casualty figures to the slightly over 1,000 U.S. Armed Service personnel and private contractors who were killed in Iraq and Afghanistan during the same period. Clearly we gun-toting Americans are our own worst enemies. The violence that we perpetrate on one another with handguns is more than 30 times as deadly than the attacks of Al Qaeda and the Taliban combined!

Not only that, but in ten states (Alaska, Arizona, Colorado, Indiana, Michigan, Nevada, Oregon, Utah, Virginia and Washington) you are more likely to be killed by a gun than in a car accident, according to an analysis just released by the advocacy group, the Violence Policy Center (VPC)."

Keep telling me how safe more guns are. Maybe, just maybe, if drink enough, I'll believe you.

No they have a big problem with rioting and crime because they are not allowed guns. Crime is way higher than America because they have really strict gun laws.

I graduated high school pre 1968 and there were bomb scares periodically. We had over 2000 students in my inner city high school and during a bomb scare every locker had to be searched. In all that time there was ONE pistol found in a locker that was brought in by a kid that was going to sell it after school. Since 1968 the NRA has fought for the right for anyone that wants a gun regardless of an assault weapon or not be allowed to buy it and they spend millions just so people like this a$$hole in Colorado can buy all the weapons they want legally.

"Since 1968 the NRA has fought for the right for anyone that wants a gun"

    This is just plain wrong.

You need to learn the facts, and stop repeating left-wing boilerplate bull.

BEFORE 1968, guns could be purchased through the mail.

Or at a dealer, or department store, or "sporting goods" store, or lots of places.

    No background checks.

    No waiting periods.

    No nothing.

How come there wasn't a mass murder every other week, if it's due to the "easy availability of guns" as the liberals love to claim?
