Being South African myself he really taught us all humility, the fact that he forgave the very people that put him behind bars for 27 years... wow, truly an insparation to the world.

He impacted my life as yet another example of the disgusting hypocrisy the media vomits on the world...celebrating a violent, unrepentant thug as if he were a saint. He was nothing more than a celebrated criminal.

I never knew him, so I can't say he impacted my life.

I would like to pose a question to some of the other posters. Many of you have called him a terrorist, which he may have been, but how were his actions any different than those of the American revolutionary soldiers that created your nation? Do you feel that the apartheid system was something that didn't need to be overturned? These are genuine questions, not attacks.

Mandela's political philosophy was diametrically at odds with my principles, but as a man, there was much to admire in Mandela. It is true that as a President, Mandela was a communist and formed alliances with countries and radical leaders that were enemies of America. But as a man who spent 27 years in prison, he demonstrated courage and perseverance. On his release, he forgave those who imprisoned him as well as his jailers who physically and emotionally abused him for much of that time. He even hired some of his former jailers as personal security.

As President, Mandela could have sought revenge on his enemies and the white minority of South Africa, but he didn't. He had the popularity and support to become a dictator, but he didn't. He acknowledged and respected the constraints the South African Constitution, the supreme law of his country. His remarkable restraint of power is worthy of note.

Whether or not I agree with him politically, I acknowledge that Mandela was a man of character and principal who deeply cared about the future of his country and his people (unlike our President Obama). But, did he impact my life personally?...no.

LOL Oh, yes I do. That's why I answered the way I did.

Some people just because they live in the U.S. claim to be authorities on American Politics. The fact that you claim to live in South Africa means zilch to me. The fact that you are RUDE speaks volumes, though. Where's your respectful comment, your links, and your opinion? Where's your debate on the issue?

You think I sound like I am quite ignorant? That I know nothing? I need to do my homework? LOL I would venture to say that perhaps your abilities to communicate intelligently may not be your strong point.

Maybe you need to try a different bait next time.

I learned that to some land is worth fighting and dieing for. To stand up for injustice no matter what the price. That one man can make a difference. And that his family stuck with him. Love endured all. The apartheids were horrid and needless. The british had no right to take over africa in the first place. So he banded his people together and sais NO this is our land. We will not give it up without a fight. You kill us, you get death as well. Although i don't agree with an eye for an eye and hate death and war. Sometimes you do or die.
