House Votes to Cut Food Stamps to Avoid Defense Reduction

Since there hasn't been a budget in over 3 years, how and where they cut funding is an interesting question. I reallly don't know why Harry Reid refuses to bring a budget to a vote?

There have been cuts to defense spending, Congressman Allen West sponsored a bill that passed unanimously (one of the few in recent history) that cut defense spending with a single page, simple to read bill.

Willl this bill make it through both Houses and past the POTUS? Considering the increase in the number of recipients on food stamps are due to the increase of income allowed (140% of poverty rate) to apply for benefits, this may not be such a bad thing.
There are domestic programs that duplicitus and federal workers benefits are higher than those in the private jobs market, it does make sense with the reduced revenues coming into the govt.

No where in the bill does it mention defense,only the author said it's to avoid defense cuts, how can we do that with Libya, Syria and NATO's (UN) demands.

If only we Americans could have a budget to see, transparent and online before a vote like the POTUS promised. Then we would have a better grasp on what is going on.

You need to realize the limits were raised because people need food! Not all people on welfare are bums or on drugs. People on SSI because they are depressed is one that needs elimination. There are doctors that are well known for getting people on SSI and I had one tell me if I gave him $500. CASH, he would see that i would be on SSI in 6 months - he does it too. No, I'm not on SSI - I'm not depressed but was checking to see if what I was told was true.... As to cutting expenses - let's let the whole hill stop getting "free" perks! Let them pay for their own gas and cars. Even postage for the mailings - taxpayers pay for - paper, printing, delivery to office then postage, let's let them pay for it themselves. I haven't seen one post worth paying for. As to federal workers benefits - it may be true but you aren't a federal worker - so I'd like to hear from them. Oh yes, let's stop helping other countries, call in the loans owed to us, and bring our jobs BACK here.

Plus lets close the loopholes that allow millionaires to get food stamps and free weatherization by putting their monies in trust funds!!

I'm well aware of how many people are abusing the system. In Philadelphia there are only 5 investigators for the huge city of millions. Stores sell ciggarettes and cheesteaks using the EBT system. Nothing EVER happens when they get reported.
All the mob wives go to the welfare office in their friends beat up cars after they take off their diamonds and furs, they need to show legal income! SSi is being decimated, I'm disabled and don't get a check because I believe it is for those who have nothing, yet people complain here about being cut off because they have $5000 in their savings!

I'm with you on all the cuts, one of my old polls was about the waste of the 535 leaders and their staff. $1.6 million in Congress alone on bottled water in one year!

I'd rather cut foreign aid than domestic anyday, but unfortunately we have NO BUDGET to see what is really going on and Harry Reid refuses to bring one up for a vote. I believe Reid should be fired for not doing the most important task he has, a budget for America to see!

The Pentagon's ability to waste money is off the charts. It really exploded during the Reagan era. A typical example... and there are HUNDREDS.. is the the B-2 bomber. Originally projected to cost $550 million each, B-2's ended up costing $2.2 billion each-literally more than their weight in gold. In addition to mass weapons waste, tens of thousands of dollars an hour are used to to fly politicians, lobbyists and weapons contractors on pleasure trips. We have more Trident missiles than we could ever use, and nobody to aim them at. It should be obvious that the "defense" budget isn't based on any rational calculation of what the defense of this country actually requires-it's based on what US arms manufacturers can get away with (almost anything, it turns out).

Why does Congress allow this to happen? Why do our legislators put up with military waste and fraud? For the same reason they do anything. Defense PACs give members of Congress many millions. Ted Stevens (R-Alaska) was one of the one of the top ten recipients of PAC contributions.
