Though House Republicans say they will not agree to a long-term increase of the debt limit until both chambers of Congress approve, the party did agree to vote favorably on a bill that would raise the debt limit for a short-term time span of three months. A three-month extension would ensure that the federal government won't default on its financial obligations.

Speaker of the House John Boehner reportedly told lawmakers that some members of Congress insist that they don't get paid until a long-term budget is passed. Do you think raising the debt limit in a more long-term way is a good idea? Or does the government need to come up with something else before it's too late?

First of all I am a conservative.
Now that that is out of the way I can answer the question honestly.
I cannot see raising the debt ceiling again if we are only going to be raising it every 3 to 6 months.
I said now that Obama got his tax hike from his Obamacare we have to find a way to keep his hands off the money and quit spending it like a drunken sailor.
We need to think of Americans first and to hell with other countries whos hand is stuck ouf for a hand out.
We have homeless here....My God I just seen on the national news tonight that the people of Sandy are STILL HOMELESS many living in tents. Here it is in the single digits here in Ohio and with us being closer to Lake Erie I can imagine what it is like there in New Jersey being right on the Atlantic...Obama needs to look at them first and to hell with his buddies in other countries.
I am willing to bet that if Obama would just quit thinking of other countries and start spending money here I am willing to bet his rating will tripple....but he is Barack Obama the Supreme Commander in Chief...

If you had a credit card with $16 trillion in debt, & interest alone was rising at $45,000 per second, would you think it made any sense to just raise the credit line?
Unfortunately, that's what people are used to.
When it's our country, you'd think that they would stop the insane spending, make them balance the budget!!

Obama added 130,000 federal workers which cost $10 billion!!!!!!!!!!!

How is that even possible? I heard it on the news yesterday! How can they possibly get paid that much money?

Congress has already spent the money, it has to raise the debt ceiling or default on it's past spending........Congress knew they would have to do it, but political posturing was to be the game before it happened, due to the holidays and the presidential race............ Now they'll have some time to work out ways to cut the spending. So, yes because it had to be done and no if it wouldn't had to be done...

Umm, Congress really doesn't have any alternative, the bills have to be payed, that's why the deficit was raised. If NOT the government stops and everything from military personal being paid to seniors receiving a SS check won't happen. Resentment towards Obama has nothing to do with paying the nations bills......

The debt ceiling should not be raised until the senate gets off it's dead ass and pass a budget which they haven't done in 4 years. Shut down the government, no pay for congress or the Obama and Biden until they do the job they are paid to do.

I was for raising it in the smallest of increments with the first suggestion of QE.Honestly though for what for more spending on irrelevant things that add no growth but cater to certain progressive idealism?.No the US Treasury takes in enough to pay our interest,our bonds and all essential services.Regardless of the fear mongering obama has spewed as reality-government will NOT shut down...only it's ability to borrow forcing them to face reality and live within their means.Then obama will not have the ability to once again pay back all his cronies recklessly on the backs of American taxpayers

Why do we have to pay interest on something created out of nothing??????? If we create our own money without any debt we would not be having this discussion. See how President Lincoln fought the Civil War and how he did not borrow any money he created and printed United States Notes, he did not borrow a red cent from any banks. "But someone murdered him, I wonder why."

First, we don't have a debt problem. We have a rich people and corporations don't want to pay problem and a no jobs problem. Once people are back to work the debt will go away as they pay their taxes. As well, Social Security has noting to do with the debt, so that is a non-issue that should be separated from the debt talk. And how about these GOP folks not passing spending bills in the first place. They are huge spenders and they want to spend and use the debt ceiling as a way to cut things they don't like.
