Honor Student Supporting Siblings Arrested For Being Too Exhausted For School -- May 25, 2012 9:12 AM (These are the real "compassionate, understanding" judges we need, eh? Freakin' "moron" - IMHO)

HOUSTON (CBS Houston) – A 17-year-old high school honor student who works two jobs and financially supports her two siblings is heading into summer on a sour note after spending a night in jail for being too tired to attend school.

Diane Tran was arrested in open court and sentenced to 24 hours in jail Wednesday after being repeatedly truant due to exhaustion. KHOU reports that Tran, a junior at Willis High School, was warned by Judge Lanny Moriarty last month to stop missing school. When she missed classes again this month, Moriarty wanted to make an example of Tran.

“If you let one (truant student) run loose, what are you gonna’ do with the rest of ‘em? Let them go too?” Moriarty asked, according to KHOU.

Tran told KHOU that in addition to taking advanced and honors classes, she works full-time and part-time jobs in an effort to try to support her older brother at Texas A&M; and a younger sister in the Houston area. After Tran’s parents divorced, they both moved away from the honor student and her two siblings.

Tran was also fined $100.

That's not how you treat someone who is trying as hard as she can. What you do is offer a little financial support and child-care. She is doing her part in society and is far more responsible than most adults.

Has to be a liberal judge. She is making good grades and trying harder than most ever will. The judge should have looked into seeing if there was any way she could receive more aid so she could quit one of her jobs. Public aid was designed to help people like this. God bless and help this girl. The judge needs his ass kicked for punishing people who are trying. If anyone can get an address where we can send money to help her, please post it. I would like to help her.

This wasn't even done by a "judge" but a "Justice of the Peace" with ONLY a high school education (which is allowable in TX as long as they are elected to the post). What a "doofus".

If I find any more info. about helping her, I will post it. Thanks.

Why not set up a fund and send Tran money instead of complaining about the judge who is bound by law to enforce it.

You have time to post this story, take the time and write her a check.

I'm a Libertarian. I certainly agree that the politicians are a big problem. You don't punish determination; you reward it. If it weren't for her, the state would be supporting those children completely. She's doing the state a favor; she didn't give birth to those children.

So very right. The "court" (actually not - see above comment) should have figured out a way to help this "courageous young woman". What a travesty~~!
