Hiroshima and Nagasaki were a laboratory experiment for US officials who wanted to see how their new weapon would work, said Episcopal priest and historian Philip Wheaton.

It was necessary, if we had invaded Japan we would have lost over a million troops. The way to put down your enemies so that they can not attack you again is disproportionate response and attacks. I am sorry that so many died, but at the time it was very necessary, millions had already died in the war so President Truman was trying to save lives, yes mainly Americans lives.

However if we had invaded Japan, lots of Japanese would have died too. If the invasion would have taken place the children, women and men would have fought us. The japanese would not have surrendered because of their honor which really is pride. Let us not forget Japan's cruelty at Pearl Harbor, during the war they would put American troops into bunkers and put 55 gallon drums in front of the bunkers and light them on fire and let the men burn to death, so was that necessary?

Was their cruelty necessary and the things they did to our troops and their own people rather than let them be captured they would kill them, or they would commit suicide.

    1) A friend of my mother's saw the mushroom cloud from a US detonation in the desert herself.
    2) After the dropping of the first bomb, Japan did not surrender. That is why we dropped the second one. We already knew wtf it would do.

I agree that we had to drop a bomb to show force, but they could have dropped it in a less populated area. It still would have shown what they were capable of .

Hiroshima was to give japan a hammer blow, they could'nt get up from, to see the effects of an A-bomb would have been about 150 on the side list of priorities,

Nagasaki... i think with hynd site was a mistake,

the bombings only happened because Japan wouldn't surrender so we had to bomb them to get our point across that we wouldn't turn down either. plus who really cares what happened then anyway we helped them rebuild Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

It's not a clear cut thing. Dropping the bomb, in the grand scheme of things, saved many innocent lives by destroying many innocent lives. Whether you think it was right or wrong, the fact remains that both of those things are true.

I wasn't trying to negate that, my basic human survival instinct clarifies that viewpoint. I'm simply pointing out that when you make a desicion you have to realize the impact of that decision.

Right. Truman was very torn on that decision, but he saved US lives. I admire him for his bravery and resolve.

Quick way to end the war with less loss of life than a full on invasion of Japan.

I don't like historical revisionists who claim that the Atom bomb wasn't necessary...yes, the two bombs were different and it was cruel but necessary.....

Just remember also that the Japanese were exceptionally cruel to everybody that they fought against...The Chinese were not only massacred by the thousands, they were also subjected to biological weapons and barbaric medical studies....not to mention the beheadings and other methods of intimidation....Don't give the Japanese govt. a pass because we used nuclear weapons...they weren't ready to surrender until the second nuke!!! just sayin...

Well I don't want to offend anybody and have them call me a hater, so I put it as nicelyas I could. I still have some ill feelings towards what the Japanese did to us at the Harbor and to our soldiers that when I watch war movies with the Japanese in them I tend to get a little upset when I see how they treated our soldiers as prisoners of war.

Yes and all of the people would have been fighting against us, men, women, and children and the million would have been just on our side. How many more Japanese would have lost their lives from the bombings and such, so the atom bombs surely saved a lot of lives on both sides.

No it was not an experiment and indeed it was necessary to end the war in the Pacific. Far more innocent people would have died had we been forced to actually land on the main Islands. Remember too we didn't start that war, we were however forced to fight it.

The Japanese would never, ever, have surrendered. Millions upon millions of Japanese and Allies would have died.
  • Brother... beachbum 2009/08/07 12:48:23

Indeed. I don't know about millions but conservative estimates are in the several hundreds of thousands of Japanese and tens of thousands Americans. But those who mourn for the innocents who died in Hiroshima and Nagasaki usually avoid that fact.
  • beachbum Brother... 2009/08/07 15:19:43
    beachbum
As you said, conservative estimates, and I figure when you are talking hundreds of thousands of Japanese, and tens of thousands of Americans, and mostly likely also Allied troops, it adds up pretty quickly - ok, maybe not millions upon millions, but going thru Tokyo in the trenches like Okinawa, and the other islands would have taken years and countless lives.

Seems like the use of the nuclear option was the best of several bad choices. It's war, it's ugly, people die. At least less lives were taken than would have been.
