Fair... rules are rules.
Foul... her treatment was too extreme.

Diane Tran, a 17 year old junior at a Texas high school, was fined $100 and forced to spend the night in jail because she missed too many classes. Miss Tran is an honour student who has two jobs, one full time and one part time, and helps support two siblings.

Considering her circumstances, do you think the school and court went too far? Or, do you think her circumstances do not change the rules and this was justified?

jail is for felons or criminals, not school students.

Find out why she does it. When kids do things like that, there is always a reason. If she is an honor student, it mean if you talk to her and at least take away some of her privileges, she is smart enough to learn her from her mistakes.

The Judge is a heartless bastard, in my opinion, since the dispostion of her case was entirely in his hands. If she was able to maintain honours grades with the schedule she held she should have been given special circumstance exoneration for her truancy. It wasn't as if the Judges hands were tied by law as to what punishment, if any, that he gave out, It was entirely an arbitrary thing. I think someone was and is jealous of her drive and intelligence.

Schools are allowed to make exceptions. I suffered extreme depression in school, I got arrested for smoking pot on a lunch break. School rules where to expel any student caught druggin on a school grounds. My I.E.P. (Itrapersonal Education Plan) stated I couldn't be expeled for self medicating. I beat the system. I don't see why if her family needs her incomes she could be treated so criminally for being a decent person.

Is this America? What's next? Shame on the school and the court system! I guess she'll have to take another job to pay the fine. Give me a break! The young lady should be commended, not punished

At my school if you miss to many classes you have a in school detention which is spending the whole day in the office. If you go over 5 late's/and or just flat out skip you get a recorded message from the Vice Principle that calls your house after dinner.

Foul is putting it lightly! I think this completely sucks! Jail, Really !?! She works 2 Jobs and is an honor student. Obviously her education and future are important to her. What sucks even more is there are a bunch of students who go to school everyday and still flunk, where is their over reaching ridiculous punishment?

Another fine example of why government should not be in the education business.

There is good reason for truancy laws, it is the Judge that is the problem. He could have easily told the school that as long as she maintained honours grades that her truancy could be excused and that they need not bring her back into the courts unless her grades fell. I say shame on her family as well for forcing her into this situation, they are taking advantage of her for their own means.

I get that rules are rules, but I think the school should have just kept her punishment at the $100 fine. She's an honor student with two jobs, helping to support two younger siblings. Forcing her to spend a night in jail was too much. It sounds like the truancy she's racked up were unavoidable. Cut her some slack; she more than deserves it.

If she's working 2 jobs to help support her family the night in jail may have been the easier fine than the days wages?

I think both the fine and the jail time are ridiculous... the school should have been understanding (providing they knew her circumstances)... and where the school wasn't, the judge damn well should have been.

Yeah, the bloody judge wastes tax dollars housing her in a jail overnight just to 'make an example' and 'not look soft'.
